Name: | Dr. Lawrence Morris [Death] | ||||||||||
Bio: | Personality: Impassive. Death is old and it shows in his demeanour. He doesn't necessarily have a pessimistic view on life but he certainly knows and acknowledges inevitability when he sees it. Of the two certain things in life, one of them is death, and watching how much the mortals around him struggle is a ceaseless fascination as much as it is dull, watching the old and weathered tape of the world and its burgeoning population of filth playing on repeat over and over again. He can come across as aloof; unapproachable and standoffish with a laissez-faire stance on just about everything apart from the job. Being around for a long time helps with looking at the world and the circumstances he faces from a more holistic viewpoint, and though he, in general, is quite happy to let things unfold and happen without interfering, he is conscious and wary of plunging himself into situations and looks - sometimes for a very long time - before he leaps. On the contrary, those who are familiar with his mortal persona would find him to be very serious - most people with his kind of job tend to be serious. He does have a sense of humour though, and every once in a while he cracks a predatory grin. Can't escape Death, can't hide from Death, can't cheat Death - it's a smile that reveals a part of his nature he finds difficult to hide. He certainly doesn't come across as the religious type, nor does he believe in miracles - a little bit of faith in a mortal soul is good for overcoming obstacles and trying to achieve what seems impossible, but an old man like him has no real need for faith. Regardless, he maintains a neutral relationship with the other Judeo-Christian stragglers. Finally, patience - it seems to be one of the qualifying criteria for being a harbinger of the apocalypse in any religion, because everyone has waited for a long time and the end is nowhere in sight. But when you've waited for a few thousand years for the curtain call, what's a few more? History: At the End of Days, Jesus Christ would break four of the seven seals and release the four horsemen - War on a red horse, Famine on a black horse, Pestilence on a white horse and Death on a pale horse. That, at least, was how the almost-too-concise story was told in the Book of Revelations in the New Testament. That, however, was not how it went when mass hysteria swept over the Judeo-Christian world and deified the horsemen before their time had come. Where there was life, there was death, and while the concept of death and the fascination with the afterlife permeated throughout ancient worlds it was personified into different types of gods - Thanatos and Hades in the Greek tradition, Anubis for the Egyptians, and so on, Death the horseman was one of the embodiments for the Christians. He was there two thousand years ago on Mt. Calvary where Jesus died and rose again, millennia before he should have first come into existence, though he feels much, much older as there are remnants of him that pertained to the general concept of Death itself. He had perhaps existed since the first signs of life crept into the planet, but there was nothing corporeal to speak of until the age of Christianity. Missionaries and religious settlers bought Death's one-way ferry ticket to the United States in the 1500s, and a lot has changed in the past five centuries. There are plenty of the dead and dying to keep him occupied here, as there is anywhere else, and he might seem more unfazed and less impatient about the long wait for the seal to be broken simply because there is work to do in the meantime.
