James 'Jem' Carstairs

Jem has spent almost all of his life knowing that he was going to die young. That has affected his personality in a thousand different ways. He has, for the most part, accepted it, although he worries about what his death will do to those who love him, especially his parabatai, Will Herondale. He rarely becomes fatalistic, and has even given up the search for a cure, wanting to spend his time living, rather than spending it trying to make it longer when he knows it's in vain anyway.

He is seen by others as a gentle, kind, and a good person, and this is for the most part true. He's very even tempered, very, very rarely getting angry, or even 'miffed' by Will's comments. At one point, Will shows suprirse that he was capable of such great joy as when Tessa accepted his marriage proposal, thinking that he simply wasn't capable of deep emotions. Will revises this, believing that Jem has never acted joyous because he's never been joyous - he hasn't exaclty had the easiest life. He very rarely complains about anything, even downplaying his illness as much as he can. He is almost unceasingly polite and gentlemanly.

Jem loves deeply, both Will and Tessa - although in very different ways. He describes Will as being hs 'own soul', and they have a very close parabatai bond. He loves Tessa with all his heart - to the point that he wants her to be happy beyond everything, even his own happiness.

He isn't perfect, though - nobody is. He's ashamed of his illness, and makes Will get his 'medicine' back. He also becomes very angry (one of the very few times we see him be violent towards anyone who isn't a demon) when Will goes to the demon drug den - feeling that his parabatai is mocking him. His pride is obvious, too, in the fact that he takes extra drug during his engagement to Tessa, wanting her to think he's stronger, and doing better than he actually is. He can also be very stubborn, and has a steel inside of him that can be surprising.

Soft spoken, and generally content to stand behind Will, he's incredibly intelligent and very much the only one who can even come close to keeping Will in line, although not even Jem is capable of doing much of that. He finds peace in ancient languages, and in his violin music, an instrument he plays very well.

Jem is Nephilim, so he has the typical powers of a Shadowhunter, although they have been often stunted by his illness. He's also fluent in Chinese, as well as speaking Greek, Latin, and Sanskrit, to name a few.
