I have to say - I agree.

I thought you should know - I've managed to extend the window of the practical application of my thesis to 45 seconds. I'm hoping to push it to over a minute, but out of curiosity, does anyone know the average time for Apparition/Summoning a wand? My times vary and I need an average to work out the Mean and Confidence Intervals.

What is your thesis?

In short? Ever had a Foe Glass or Sneakoscope? The charms on them are types of dark detectors. My thesis is taking those charms back to the basic building blocks and weaving them through wards.

The wards themselves will be imbibed with dark detectors and be able to sense malevolence or danger. I'm combining it with the sort of charms on things like vanishing cabinets. Thus when someone who intends to harm the occupants inside attempts to get into the house, they'll be 'vanished' to a remote location for a set period of time to allow those inside to escape.

It sounds a lot crazier when I write it out like that, doesn't it? But I've managed to get the window of vanishing to 45 seconds. But I don't know if its long enough.

Actually, it sounds brilliant.

I would expect that if the wizard or witch in question was awake and competent at Apparition and Summoning, it would be enough, but if they weren't, or if there were children or others who couldn't Apparate for whatever reason, then I think it would take slightly longer to prepare for Side-along. Mostly just to get to the same place.

Hrmm, thats a excellent point. I'll have to readjust some of the basic equations.

That sounds absolutely brilliant, actually.

Are you asking for averages of the general population? Shouldn't you look at the averages of the occupants of whichever house you're planning on safeguarding instead? Finding the confidence levels of the mean for a general population wouldn't make as much sense, right?

Unless you're talking about applying the averages to something else. Which, in the case, ignore me.

True, but that would mean my personally having to tailor the wards to each specific individual which would take an inordinate amount of time. And if I were unable to perform the wards - for instance if I had laryngitis, the wards would be..useless.

Ideally, if a 'blanket' ward could be created, someone else could be taught to use it and it could be used in emergencies or where time is of the essence.

Once you put a ward in place, shouldn't it stay in place unless broken through? Yes, it may be a pain in the arse the first time to cover everyone currently there, but you could ask for help. I'd be willing to help. And if others arrive at the safehouse, then you're only adjusting the wards to include them, not everyone all over again. And again, you can teach others that you trust to help so if you're not there to do it yourself, someone else is.

You could additionally create a blanket ward for when you're lacking time, but then when you have that time, switch it over to the more specialized ones to narrow the chances of someone breaking through them. It would provide extra protection, if nothing else.
