Character Tropes

▸ DEADPAN SNARKER "I love pity parties! I wish I'd brought the hats. What do you want to mope about first? How it's going to take you a whole day to become loved and popular again?" -- Christian says this to Lissa on the first night they meet in the church attic. Because Lissa is a Dragomir, her family is much more prestigious than the Ozeras (despite Lissa and Jill being the only Dragomirs left). Because of what Christian's parents did, most of the Royals shunned Christian and his aunt, writing them off as "Strigoi wannabes" and more-or-less tried to ignore their existence. Everybody felt sympathy for Lissa when she lost her family, and offered their condolences for the tragedy she suffered. Lissa can easily gain her friends back upon her return, all she has to do is be who she is. As for Christian, he was lucky to have even one or two people he could genuinely call his friend, before he started hanging around Rose and Lissa.

▸ I SURRENDER, SUCKERS In Frostbite, when Rose, Christian, Eddie, Mia, and Mason are taken captive by the Strigoi, Christian proves to be quite cunning and clever in the face of danger. Rose tried to signal to him a way to escape their dicey situation, and Christian was almost instantly on the same page as Rose without even speaking a word to her, verbally. Isaiah (their Strigoi captor) had proposed to the Moroi in the group they could go free if they just chose to kill one of their dhampir friends and become Strigoi. Christian posed as if he couldn't take the pain of his bloodlust anymore and they released him from his bonds. He used his close proximity to Rose to burn the plastic restraint off her wrists, and the pair worked together to try and get all their friends out safely.

▸ MISTAKEN FOR ROMANCE Christian and Lissa both tend to become jealous if other people are getting a little too close for comfort to their respective "other half". Christian is probably a little worse in this regard than Lissa, as he became extremely jealous of Adrian Ivashkov when Adrian started hanging around Lissa. Adrian clearly liked Lissa, but only in a friendly way because he was curious about her own abilities as a spirit user. Given the contrast between his and Adrian's reputations, Christian feared Lissa might leave him for someone with less "baggage" and forget about him. On the other hand, Lissa became jealous of both Mia Rinaldi and Jill Mastrano (the then-unknown lost Dragomir) when she discovered Christian was offering to teach them about defensive magic. In both these instances, nothing romantic was actually going on with the 'offending parties'.

▸ BADASS BOOKWORM The church attic where Christian hung out held a lot of interesting secrets about St. Vladimir, namely in journals Christian found in a box. He uses these journals to try and piece together why Lissa acts the way she does. Since people tended to ignore him back then, he had quite a lot of time to read the different books from the church library. He's very insightful and is able to pick up important details from simple clues. When he's figured out the gravity of Lissa's situation, he does everything in his power to protect her, which includes becoming a stowaway in Rose's daring rescue mission. He almost dies trying to protect Lissa and Rose from psi-hounds, but is subsequently healed and saved from imminent death.

▸ REAL MEN COOK Christian took cooking lessons as an elective at St. Vladimir's Academy, and isn't ashamed of it. He loves to cook, and regularly prepares meals for his close friends - especially Rose, who is a big fan of his bacon-wrapped triple-meat meatloaf. His choice to cook is not seen as effeminate and is appreciated by all those who have been treated to his cooking.
