Five Fast Facts
- Is a complete sucker for Hot Chocolate. Always has a box of Swiss Miss Classic with Marshmallows in his cupboard, no matter what time of year.
- Lives in a small two bedroom apartment above his store. As a result of this, if he runs out of books to read in his apartment, he has a tendency to stray downstairs and just "borrow" books from the store like his own personal library.
- Has debated writing a fantasy book himself, but as a draw full of half finished stories will tell you, he's never been able to finish a story.
- Does have a driving licence, but doesn't have a car. He enjoys taking public transport as it gives him a chance to read during his day.
- Has a mobile phone, but is notorious among his friends as being *truly* awful at responding to messages at times. He's trying to get better, he just gets easily distracted.
Personality
- + Considerate: Likely it is a direct result of the amount of time that he spends in his own head, but Mal tries, where he can be as considerate at possible to beliefs, opinions and feelings of others. Suffering quite badly from anxiety himself, he likes to ensure that none of his friends ever feel the ways he does in his darkest moments. So, he will go out of his way to ensure that all his friends feel appreciated and valid, not just in what he says to them, but in his actions. Often this means giving things like small, meaningful gifts to his friends, or just turning up to support them if they are playing music or sports somewhere.
- + Optimistic Even though Mal has a tendency to get stuck in his own head a lot, he is ultimately, a positive person. Perhaps it is the fact that he has spent so much of his time with his head in his books, but he is very much someone who believes in Happily Ever Afters and True Love. While yes, he might not have met his true love yet, it doesn’t mean that they are not out there. Despite the fact that sometimes it makes him come across as a little naïve when he shares these thoughts with another, he would ultimately rather be seen as naïve then to be seen as jaded with life.
- = Watcher: In Mal’s case, this is neither a positive or a negative as it has its own mixture of pros and cons. So, on the one hand, he is good at noticing things that many others might miss. This means he might pick up how you want your coffee without ever having to tell him, or that you prefer to go to place a to hang out, then place b. At the same time though, because he spends so much of his time watching others around him, he sometimes forgets that life is there to live. As a result of this, he often finds himself standing at the side-lines, rather than actually participating, something that is very much obvious by the state of his love life (or lack of).
- - Extroverted Introvert: If you were to meet Mal, you would never guess that he isn’t someone who is truly comfortable in overly social situations. It’s not that he doesn’t enjoy being around people, because he does, as he can make small talk with strangers in the shop for hours on end with ease. Mal's problem though is that afterwards, he needs alone time to recharge and relax. It is not uncommon for him to disappear socially off of the map for a few days after a people-y few days. For Mal this usually involves him sitting around in his apartment reading and drinking hot chocolate.
- - Anxious: Even though Mal knows better then to allow himself to get caught in his own head, it is still something that happens far more then he is happy with. This is as when this happens, he ends up by wasting large periods of time fretting about stupid things, that typically tend to resolve themselves. It's not because he is a negative person, as he is often quite an upbeat individual. For him it is more about checking and ensuring his motives are pure, and that things are being said and done for the right reason. While a lot of the time this just means quietly pondering scenario's, at his worst, he can be found pacing around his apartment frantically. He has also been known to suffer from a full blown panic attack if things get bad enough.
Family History
For nearly as long as there has been a Mercy Cove, there have been members of the Harris family living it. Originally a family of traders, Isaiah Harris first came to the area with a cart full of linen and supplies, expecting to sell his goods to the early settlers before heading back to nearby civilization. What stopped him in their tracks though was not just the scenery of the new town, but the sense of community among its people (not to mention the promise of being the first established traders in a new area). So, sending for his wife and young son, the family were sent for, and a few weeks later the Harris family settled in the area, permanently. His wife, a teacher by trade, was greeted with open arms by the people of Mercy Cove, keen to establish educational services in the area. It was as her tenure of school mistress though, that Eliza Harris first noticed something untoward with some of the towns people, and some of the strange goings on and happenings across town. Of course, there were rumors of witchcraft and such like, there had been similar whispers everywhere they had ever stayed, it was not uncommon in their area. The family had always dismissed them as simply whispers until the day that a small child, when scared by a much larger child, suddenly turned into a bear in front of her eyes.
Unable to believe she had seen such a thing, she quickly dismissed the other children, and the parents were sent for. By the time the parents had arrived, the child was once more a child, but Eliza’s eyes were permanently opened to the alternative history of the town. More and more curious, she began to quietly investigate and document her findings in a book, both a warning and a guide to her family of the strange goings on of the town. So, it was then that the tradition of continuing the book, began. Each generation adding its own notes, its own cautionary tales, until eventually an alternative history of sorts of the town was born.
While the family changed what sorts of goods, they dealt in over the years, it has always been a constant that the Harris family have remained shopkeepers or traders over the years, right up until present day.
Family History
Born and raised in Mercy Cove, Malachi, or Mal for short, represents the next in a long line of Harris’ to inhabit the area. Like many of the inhabitants of the area, his childhood, while happy, was of little note. Raised in a large family home in Lakelands, Mal, like his siblings, never really wanted for anything growing up. While they never might have had cutting edge technology, or went on lots of flash foreign vacations, they did live very comfortably and enjoyed frequent camping trips together. From a young age though, it was quite obvious that Mal took after his softly spoken father, perhaps more than any of his other siblings. While they played on video games together, Mal was quite content to sit with his father and read through the never dwindling stack of new books that seemed to make their way into the house, thanks to his father owning a local bookshop. Because, why on earth did he need video games, when he had a bright and exciting worlds available to him at his fingertips?
Graduating from High School, Mal, never being overly comfortable with travelling too far from home, enrolled in the local Community College in a Business Administration Program, with a Minor in English. In his mind, and the minds of his parents, a perfectly sensible course for him in a small town like Mercy Cove. In their minds, it gave him plenty of options, seeing as he was hardly likely to be paid to sit around with his nose in a book all day long.
Then going on to graduate from College, Mal found himself somewhat as a loss as to what to do. He did try and take on a few different jobs around town, however none of them quite suited him and he quickly found himself growing bored or frustrated of the work that he was completing. That was until one night where after a discussion with his father, he was offered the opportunity to purchase a share of the bookshop from his father, using some money he had inherited from his Grandmother at her passing.
Not looking back, Mal immediately went about moving into the small apartment above the store and took over the day to day running of it from his retiring father. While technically his father does still own half of the bookshop, his involvement in the running is very minimal. So this was why Mal, armed with ideas of what his perfect bookshop would be, went around making small tweaks and improvements to make the A Likely Story Book and Coffee shop that exists in Mercy Cove today.
