BIO Name: Joel Solomon Phillips Meaning: Joel means God Will Be Willing Age: 33 DOB: 12/7/1980 Parents: Jeremiah (Jerry) & Mary Siblings: Ada, 31 and Dinah, 29 Occupation: Second string quarterback for the New York Giants. Hometown: Sweetwater, Texas. Current Residence: Gramercy Park, Manhattan, New York City
Short Bio: Joel was born on a cold December day to parents who hoped two things for him. First that he would love God and raise a family to love him the same. And second that he would play football. That's basically what his family loved. God and football. But before you judge, realize this was West Texas, and those things were pretty popular.
After two sisters Ada and Dinah were born two and four years later, their family moved to Wiggins, Mississippi. They all knew it would be only temporary but the money from the job Jerry offered was too good to pass up. Football was still at such a big push that during the summers Joel was sent back to Sweetwater to live with his aunt and uncle and got to football camp. They knew that by the time Joel entered high school they would all move back. Football was just too important, and they wanted him playing for the best coaches the nation had to offer.
In late 1994, when Joel was in eighth grade, they did move back to Sweetwater. It was actions like this that left Ada ad Dinah feeling like what they thought or wanted didn't matter. The two of them, especially Dinah had only really known Mississippi to be their home. Even Joel was leaving close friendships to move back to Texas. But friendships didn't matter. Football and God mattered. And he excelled in football. He was beyond the best on the team and led his team to two state championhips. He was scouted by all of the big Texas Colleges, Oklahoma, Iowa, Penn State, and even a few Ivy League colleges. But the dream was always to play for The University of Texas in Austin, and with the urging of his parents he did just that.
College flew by and he was picked in the first round of the NFL draft by The Arizona Cardinals. He was their second string QB only until halfway through the first season. The starting QB was injured and he was put to the test. Joel helped their season improve and they won most of the rest of their games. He played their for the next five years until his contract was up and he's been with the Giants since. Two years ago the Giants got some guy fresh out of college that was really good but he took the starting QB spot from Joel. It was tough for him and he had to have faith that he had been in football for ten years and the average NFL career lasted only 3 years. But it still was very hard on him and he worked twice as hard to earn back his starting spot.
As for his personal life, well he did love God. But he ditched the Southern Baptist religion long ago, to much argument from his parents. But when Dinah got pregnant at 20 years old, they realized there were bigger problems and as long as he still worshiped God, it didn't matter what Christian religion he claimed. He didn't necessarily claim any denomination, but he attended Presbyterian services when he could.
Also, in the last year in Arizona he met a nice young lady named Rosanna. He fell for her Guatemalan charm and she fell for his Mississippi accent. They married after three months together. Nine months later they had a daughter, Corina Marie. Unfortuantely, when Joel was sent to New York, Rosanna refused to go there. Joel asked her if she expected to never leave Arizona, and she turned it around on him saying that it was either her and Corina, or football. He of course didn't want to have to choose and reminded her that a marriage required give and take, He said they would keep a home in Arizona and spend the off season there. She would not give. He then found out that she was cheating on him the whole time with the man that did the landscaping on their home, Paolo. She didn't want to leave the man she really loved. They of course divorced, and the next battle was custody. Joel didn't want to take Corina (or as he called her Corie) away from her mother, but he didn't want to leave his little girl in Arizona either. They went to court and they won equal custody. Of course equal custody was hard to do from opposite sides of the country. So they agreed, Joel would get Corie during the summers and on every other major holiday. Summers made it hard for him to have her, since he had football practice constantly, but he found a nanny and made it work. There was no way he would give up this precious time with his daughter.
In present day, Corie is almost five years old and has her daddy wrapped around her pinky. He would do anything for her, and he has, which hinders him from a dating life. But he'll get there.
