Luna Lovegood @ Afresh

{ Luna Lovegood
And all of the ghouls come out to play
And every demon wants his pound of flesh
But I like to keep some things to myself
I like to keep my issues drawn
It's always darkest before the dawn

HOGWARTS HOUSE | YEAR: Ravenclaw | 7th Year (Class of 1999)
BLOOD STATUS: Halfblood

RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Dating Neville Longbottom

FAMILY BACKGROUND:
• Xenophilius Lovegood, (father, 45)
• Helena Lovegood (mother, deceased)

Xenophilius met Helena on a expedition to Greenland. Helena was tall, mysterious, and very beautiful. So beautiful, in fact, that Xenophilius left his travel group in order to pursue her, convinced that she was a descendant of mythical Sirens that once led Vikings astray. He introduced himself to her with chewing gum wadded up in his ears so as not to fall victim to her songs. Amused with his quirky charm, Helena went to dinner with the strange man, who quickly endeared himself to her. She was an alchemist and astronomer, who enjoyed myths, legends, and folklore. Listening to Xenophilius tell his stories opened her world just a little bit more.

Xenophilius stayed in Greenland for two whole years courting his siren. It was six months before she was able to convince him that she was not a siren and did not need to wear gum in his ears. Although he believed her, he still secretly kept gum handy, just in case. Finally, Xenophilius asked his beloved to marry him. After their wedding, they traveled the world in an elaborate boat, seeking myths and adventures. Another two years passed before they decided to settle in Ottery St. Catchpole, and that was when Luna was born.

SHORT QUOTE OR SHORT LYRIC GOES HERE
_______________________________

Quirky is perhaps the best possible adjective in the dictionary to describe Luna's sense of style. It's not that she intends to dress that way. In fact, her general choice in clothing is fairly muted: she tends to stick to dark skirts and bold sweaters. It's the accessories that give her the extra flare. On any given day, Luna might be spotted wearing spectrespecs, giant anamorphic hats to support her quidditch team of choice, or a butterbeer cork necklace. She occasionally loses her shoes, which seem to be stolen by her classmates.

Beyond her love for bizarre accessories, Luna is actually a pretty girl. Her hair is a bright, sunny shade of blonde, and her eyes are a dreamy gray. Here eyebrows are so pale they're nearly invisible. Luna usually lets her hair down and allows it to flow naturally, although she has more recently learned how to keep it tame and under control. She has a great fondness for all things shiny or loud in color.

She's known for her incredibly relaxed demeanor, and lets teases and taunts roll right off of her back. In stressful situations, she can often be caught staring out the window. When she walks, there's an airiness to her steps, and she prefers skipping to running. Luna has a high-pitched voice, and even the tone of it begs the impression that she's in another world, drifting off. She has a sweet, endearing smile, and is not afraid to reach out and touch others when they are in need of comfort.

No one can accuse Luna of being close-minded. Her mind is so open that if it were to rain, he brain might get wet. Some may say that she is naive, but really she just enjoys the possibilities that surround her. So what if there is no such thing as a Crumple-Horned Snorkack? The believe that something so far beyond the limits of the imagination only makes the world a brighter and more interesting place.

Luna is as loyal as they come. She has grown up being teased and cajoled for her eccentric beliefs and style of dress, so when the rare gem comes along that truly cares about her, Luna develops unconditional and dedicated love for that person. Observant in nature, she has always been a good listener and does her best to comfort friends in their moments of need. She loves to create gifts for her friends if only to see them smile.

Luckily for Luna, she is very laid back. It might be easy to toss an insult Luna's way, but it certainly isn't simple to make it stick. Luna has never been a fan of the constant teasing, but tries not to let anyone know that on the surface. Her hurt is her own, and she does not feel the need to burden anyone with her pains. In the grand sceme of things, she thinks hurt feelings a very, very small. She also find it a comfort that there is no one else in the world just like her, and that she will always stand out in a crowd. Being different isn't a bad thing; it makes her special.

Aside from interesting articles, Luna also has a love of animals. She loves how they respond to a person's deeper emotions in a way more observant than most humans can. Whenever Luna is having a bad day, and if she feels like she cannot relate to anyone at all, Luna will find herself in the Owlery, or walking along the edge of the Forbidden Forrest. Sometimes she looks for fairies.

Ravenclaw Pisceans spend so much time dreaming or reading books of legends that it's a wonder they ever come down to earth. Care must be taken that they do not neglect their material needs, including those that involve sleep, food, and drink. These wizards are natural seers, and often specialize in things like horary astrology, cartomancy, dream interpretation, oracles, and the summoning of visions. Because they possess both intellectual acumen and emotional awareness, they are capable of great insight. They are quiet students, not always the best in their classes, but tend to be brilliant at subjects which they are personally interested in. Shy and nervous, they are easily bullied or intimidated, and need some looking after by more assertive students. From here

5 RANDOM FACTS

‹‹ Luna loves food. It isn't always the taste, but she loves the texture and the color and the way food looks. She will try anything once, and everything twice, before she ever decides if she really likes something or not. Sometimes, she insists that she can taste the emotions of the preparer of the dish. When her father is angry, his toast tastes terrible, and her mother's birthday cakes always had that extra longing for adventure.

‹‹ For much of her life, Luna was sure she'd never fall in love with anything that wasn't a merman. She has always loved the ocean, and when she was quite small, her mother would take her to the beach to collect seashells. They often made jewelry or wreathes or picture frames decorated with the shells. It was when she was six years old that Luna saw her first merperson, and she knew from then on that she wanted to get married under the sea. When she went to Hogwarts, Luna never found much attraction to the opposite sex. However, now that she is older, she is pretty sure that she couldn't spend the rest of her life eating gillyweed, and has grown to accept the fact that she will have to marry a human after all.

‹‹ Luna has kept a collection of pets at home, but has never brought one to Hogwarts. Her father has always grown deeply attached to the pets, so Luna doesn't mind leaving them behind. However, she does miss having animals surround her night and day. She has an entire pond full of fish right outside of her window, and so has never kept a cat because she has always worried that a cat would eat her fish.

‹‹ Luna has always loved other languages, but has never been able to learn one. Her studies have been mostly average, and memory has never been her strong suit. If she could choose any language to know, it would probably be Gobbledegook.

‹‹ Every year on the anniversary of her mother's death, Luna and her father go to sea. Sometimes they go to the ocean, sometimes they take a riverboat, but always they spend time on the water. Her father sings a song, and Luna throws the petals of flowers into the water. After their voyage, they go home and drink a glass of wine. Luna has been drinking wine on the anniversary of her mother's death since she was ten years old, and has never liked the taste of liquor because it reminds her of death.

Luna wasn't always as loony as everyone makes her out to be. Her father may have always had a knack for the quirkiness, but her mother was actually quite grounded. She spent many long days teaching her daughter about the stars and the ocean and telling her all of the stories she could fill the evenings with. Luna was always close to her father, but she was her mother's daughter at heart.

When Luna was eight, her grandmother was diagnosed with a terminal illness. For a short period of time, Helana Lovegood traveled back and forth between Greenland and England, to spend time with her mother, and also determined to final magical cure for a muggle illness. She became obsessed with her work, spending long hours into the night and early morning fussing with potions and chemicals and everything that she could in order to invent her cure. Luna always wanted to lend a hand, but often found herself only watching as her mother muttered to herself, deep in thought.

At nine years old, Luna witnessed the event that would change her world forever. Helena had achieved much progress in her work with potions, but needed to test a potion to be certain that the side-effects weren't too severe. Certain that the only side effects would be dizziness, Helena downed a potion while Luna sat on the steps, watching. Clueless as to how to help, Luna watched as her mother sputtered and cried out, the vial shattering at her feet as she collapsed, her breathing quickly becoming shallowed. Luna spent the last few moments of her mother's life holding her hands, her mother whispering a story about the stars falling into the ocean.

After her mother's death, Xenophilius grew distant as a father. He loved his daughter dearly, and would do anything for her, especially to make her smile, but he was really clueless about how to relate to her as a woman. Not to mention, as she grew, Luna grew more and more into her mother's image. His attempts to explain what had happened to her mother were somewhat failed, but he promised Luna that one day again she would see her mother. Luna embraced that belief fully, and because of that, barely even cried at her mother's funeral. It wasn't until years later that she really began to understand the concept of death, and even then, Luna made the choice to hold tight to her beliefs that one day, again, she and her mother would walk hand in hand on the beach.

Luna was happy to get her acceptance letter for Hogwarts and to be sorted into Ravenclaw. From the very beginning, she knew she was different than the other students, and almost immediately she found herself the subject of bullying behavior. One of her first friends was Ginny Weasley, and Luna loved the fire of her new friend, both in hair and in spirit. Ginny was also one of the few people that did not make fun of her and take her things, so Luna quickly became a loyal friend. Through Ginny, Luna let her world open up a little, and she met many interesting faces and friends throughout her time at Hogwarts.

No one can accuse Luna of being cruel, and it was her light-hearted and happy personality that lead her to become the announcer for the school's Quidditch games. Initially Luna shared the position with Zacharius Smith, and although she was often told that she was terrible at it, she happily continued to show up each week for the post.

At the beginning of her fourth year, Ginny introduced her to a few more of her friends: Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom. They had boarded the Hogwarts Express to find Luna reading a copy of The Quibbler upside-down. Although strange, Ginny defended her friend to the boys, and they all soon grew to get along. Later that year, when Dolores Umbridge had stiffled studies of Defense Against the Dark Arts, Luna turned to Harry for help with the subject.

In her sixth year, Luna and Neville Longbottom began to grow close. When he asked her to the school's prom, hosted by the Muggle Studies class, Luna assumed that he was asking her as a friend. But Neville came with flowers, and they had a lovely time together. It wasn't until Neville kissed her that Luna realized that there was more to their friendship, and they have been going steady ever since.

journal entry

‹‹It certainly is strange to be a part of the oldest year of students at Hogwarts. When I was a first year, I thought this year would never come. Even last year, it seemed impossible. Now it is here, but being done with this year also seems impossible. I wonder if perhaps space and time might bend and I will wake up tomorrow and find myself a first year again.

I seem to have misplaced my Potions assignment. At least, I cannot find it. Perhaps I forgot the assignment in my shoes, which have also gone missing. Or perhaps nargles took it. I cannot really say. If it does not turn up soon, I will just have to rewrite it.

I found some eggshells in the hallway yesterday. I nearly walked on them and thought about how silly that would be, to literally walk on eggshells. Instead I decided to collect them, and I am planning to make a new pair of earrings from them. They're a really lovely shade of blue. At least they weren't rotten.
