034; 8 January 1980.
The violence of the past few days has had a sobering effect. My greatest sympathies to the Watkins family, as well as to those who have been injured in the attacks on Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley.
[Warded to Rabastan Lestrange, Regulus Black, Persephone Jugson, & Lucius Malfoy]
By now you have all read, and I believe all responded to Mr Lestrange. As your mentor, I should like to add a few words as well.
When you took the Dark Mark, you agreed to serve the Dark Lord to the best of your abilities. Yes, you are also supporting the cause of purifying the Wizarding World, but ultimately, your goal is to serve the Dark Lord. There may be times when you are asked to kill mudbloods. There may be times when you are asked to sit back and exercise patience in the face of great injustice. For some of you the first may be more difficult, for some the latter, in the end, I am interested only that you do as he requests.
We have all had sacrifices requested of us. How far you will go in his ranks will depend greatly upon your ability to serve Him and not your own personal interests. I expect that you will have thought about what Mr Lestrange has said, as well as what I have written here. Consider your reasons for joining the Dark Lord's army, and what went through your mind when you took the Mark. Do not be fooled into thinking that those reasons are not known to him.
If you wish to succeed and hold a place of honour and respect in the coming world, I expect you to put the greater good above your own personal desires and wishes. It seems that young Barty Crouch was unable to do so, and in the end, we may all suffer for his indiscretion. I should like to believe that you are all more dedicated to this cause than to do such a thing, but at the same time I wish to make it perfectly clear that if I receive the slightest hint that any of you might in your actions or words compromise the cause that we support, that I shall not be lenient.
I will see you tomorrow; We will be practising unforgivables.
