[Warded Private]

I feel as if I am failing Father.

She ought to be courting by now. I have been remiss.

[Warded to Laelia]
Laelia I worry Laelia, you know that Lucia cares for your well being like you were her own sister.

Were you able to take Tullia and Prisca out for an afternoon?

[Added Ward to Lucia]
Laelia will be joining us for luncheon tomorrow. Will you please have the elves set another plate?

Of course.

I take it you spoke with her then? May I ask how it went?

We spoke for a little bit and I do not believe she will make the mistake again. I think she understands that you meant well and was likely only embarrassed.

I I am afraid that I have been remiss with her.

It was not my intention to embarrass her, but I am glad at least that she knows I was acting in her best interests.

Remiss how? You have been an attentive and dutiful brother, Patrice. She is young still. I am sure she has appreciated the freedom, and it is certainly not too late to require her to begin fulfilling her duties.

I know that it wasn't. I cannot imagine what Do you feel as if she is struggling since Father's death? I wonder if it isn't the best for her to spend so much time with Mother. The French have different notions of

If Father were here he could allow her the freedom and I am certain he would have done so, but she also lived under Father's roof and watchful eye. She does not live under mine, but as her brother and her eldest male relative her happiness and security is my responsibility. I should have taken the situation under control long before now. There are not so many young men her age and I would rather not have to look abroad if it is not necessary.

I feel as though, perhaps, she is growing too used to being unsupervised. I moved directly from my father's home to your home, and that is, I feel, how it should be. Unfortunately, your father has passed, and Laelia is left rather unattended to. I mean no disrespect to your mother, of course, but she doesn't provide the same guidance a strong male figure would. If you are worried about her, beau, I would of course support you if whatever you thought would help her. Inviting her into our home so you can keep a closer eye is by no means ideal--

Perhaps she would be well suited to someone older than her? I hope that, though I was younger than her at the time, I have been a good wife. That is largely credited to having you as a husband of course. Perhaps she would benefit from a silimar situation?

It is one thing for Mother - as a widow she is expected to be able to live on her own and even perhaps some eccentricities I fear I have been preoccupied with business and my writing and have, perhaps, not given her the attention that she ought to have. Perhaps we should invite her to stay with us over the holidays? It might be even nice for you to have some assistance with the girls considering your condition?

She said herself that she would prefer someone with some maturity and so the thought that you suggest has occurred to me. Certainly it has worked well for us and I know that I would rather see her settled with someone who is fully acquainted with his family responsibilities and not likely to demonstrate some of the same lunacy that some of the younger generation seems prone to do.
