Bio: | Character Name: Kurt Wagner Character Codename: Nightcrawler Character Age: 25 Character Appearance: Kurt was born cover in a 1/4” deep blue fur, and bright yellow eyes with no visible iris. He also has a long prehensile tail. He's on the short side and slim, be he was an professional acrobat in his teens, and continues to keep in excellent shape. Height: 5' 9' (Yes that's much shorter than his PB's actual height. Shush) Weight: 160 lbs. Hair Color: Nearly violet blue Eye Color: Bright yellow Character Powers: His primary power is teleportation. Some rules on how it works: 1. It's not teleportation, strictly speaking. He's opening a portal to a dimension with different physics and stepping back out again. This is why he can orient himself in any direction as he comes out. 2. There's a “bamf” sound from displacement of air and the smell of sulfur, as he pops in and out. 3. He can take objects he's carrying and a person or two with him, but more mass is more strain on him. 4. Teleporting longer distances also wears him out – about 2 miles is what's he comfortable with doing, although he could try farther in a true emergency. 5. He has to either see where he's teleporting, or be familiar enough to know where to come out. Otherwise he might end up in a wall. Fortunately, he as an excellent innate sense of spatial orientation and memory for places. 6. He maintains momentum when he teleports. If he's falling he can come out so that gravity counteracts the momentum somewhat. But no bamf-ing out of high speed vehicles. Unless it's to something moving a similar speed. Other powers: He can walk on walls and hang from ceilings. There's a couple of theories on why this is. I like the one that he unconsciously shifts his personal gravity around. He has excellent low light vision. He fades into shadow easily, to all but completely unnoticeable. He has excellent agility and reflexes, but it's hard to tell how much of that is simply training as an acrobat since early childhood. His tail is strong, can hold his weight briefly, and flexible enough to be a sort of third arm. Character Strengths: Kurt is playful, a bit of a prankster, and laughs easily, even at himself. He takes pride in being the little blue guy (most of the time), and refuses to be bitter about how people treat him. Underneath the happy go lucky exterior is a sharp mind, and an iron sense of ethics. He is devoutly Catholic. He tries to have compassion and kindness for all of God's creations. And we are ALL God's creations. He also is an accomplished hand to hand fighter and fencer. He sometimes put on the air of gallant swashbuckler, a la Errol Flynn. When he's really showing off, he can wield a third sword with his tail. His native languages are German and Roma. He is fluent in English, is somewhat conversant in French, Italian and Spanish, reads Latin and Greek proficiently, and some Hebrew. Character Weaknesses: His physical appearance is an obvious weakness; people often assume he is evil and demonic in nature. If they see past that and are disarmed by his charm, they sometimes doesn't take him seriously, until he is suddenly very serious. His faith is also a weakness. He sometimes struggles with the poorer actions of the Church, and worse - why a loving God allows so much of the evil and suffering in the world. When he has a bout of doubt, it can shake his entire sense of self. He's a good fighter who believes someone must stand up for innocent people, and will deliver a serious beatdown if necessary. However, he can be vocal about taking the least violent path he sees working, and that can lead to him butting heads with his more militant teammates. Oh yeah, and he's sometimes a huge flirt, but so far with little to no follow through. Character History: Kurt was taken is a baby by Margali Szardos, a gypsy and sorceress who traveled as part of a Bavarian circus. She told him she found him with hours after his birth, in a small roadside shelter in the Bavarian Alps. She claimed to have found him with his father, Eric Wagner, dead of a heart attack on the road outside, and Kurt's mother lying next to the baby dying. He celebrates his birthday on November 11, the day she said she'd found him. Margali had two children, Jimaine and Stefan, who Kurt considers his sister and brother. He was raised pretty much by the entire circus. It was full of unusual people, so the obviously mutant kid was not treated as a freak. He picked up all kinds of eclectic knowledge from the crowd of well traveled and sometimes well-read people in his life. He also trained to be acrobat from an early age, and became part of the star act in his teens. Nightcrawler was his stage name. The audience usually assumed his appearance was stage make up. When Kurt was 17, and American millionaire, Arnos Jardine, bought the circus Kurt was a part of. Jardine intended to move its best acts into his American circus. Once Kurt came to America, however, Jardine demanded that Wagner be placed in the circus' freak show. Appalled, Wagner left and made his way back to Germany, to find his foster brother Stefan, who had left the circus years ago. He discovered that Stefan had gone mad and had brutally slain several children. He fought Stefan, hoping to stop his rampage. In the course of the struggle, Kurt unintentionally broke Stefan's neck. The locals were not grateful. They decided to try to lynch the thing that looked like a demon, who had just killed a man. Fortunately, he had popped on Professor Xavier mental radar during his brief time in America. The Professor whammied the lynch mob, rescued Kurt, and invited him to come back to the Institute. Kurt asked to first go and explain what he happened to Stefan to his foster mother and sister, before he made a decision. Margali was devastated and furious with Kurt. More than a little heartbroken, Kurt agreed to go back to America with Xavier. The Institute was great for Kurt. He made friends quickly. He threw himself into his school work – more formal than he was used to, but he took to it well. He graduated a little late, because he wanted to make sure he had a solid base for college and that his English was perfect. He then started college at nearby Fordham University. He had trepidations about going to school where he might not be so socially accepted. He stuck to the evening program at Westchester Campus, and continued in live in the Mansion. It wasn't always easy or fun interacting with the other students, but he managed, and graduated with a B.A. in Philosophy in 2009. He's been teaching at the Institute for the last two years. Well, he'd been teaching fencing for a while, but he's picked up philosophy and fine arts classes. There's always an ethic class on his slate. What the focus of other classes is has varied. He's open to students asking for what they want the next semester. Kurt is considering going back to school. Maybe even seminary. He's been mentored by a priest at nearby Church of St. Michael the Archangel. With the rector's recommendation, he might be let in, despite his appearance. He's not 100% sure he's cut out for the ministry, and besides, the path to ordination would take him away from the school a lot for a couple of years. It would almost certainly make being active as part of the X-men difficult to impossible for a while. | ||||||||||
