Character Name: Joshua Foley Character Codename: Elixir Character Age: 17 Character Appearance: Josh has a very stereotypical, ‘all-American boy next door’ look about him. Blond hair, blue eyes, fit, toned and athletic without being bulky. He positively oozes an impression of supreme physical health and well being. Height: 5’9” Weight: 157 Hair Color: blond Eye Color: blue Character Powers: Josh is an omega level mutant capable of manipulating living matter at a genetic level. Right now he can only use his power to heal injuries on an almost completely instinctive/reflexive level, with time, practice, and study, though, this will eventually progress to an ability not just to heal, but to harm or to alter his subjects at the most fundamental genetic level (changing hair color, eye color, blood type, reactivating suppressed mutant abilities)...and even to resurrect the very recently dead under limited circumstances. Using his power takes energy, and the greater the injury the more energy Josh has to expend to heal it. If he overextends himself too far he can end up catatonic or comatose. His skin will eventually go bright, metallic gold, and if/when he develops a death touch it will cause his skin to go temporarily black. Character Strengths: Josh is bright, inquisitive, something of a perfectionist, and surprisingly gentle under the mask of epic douchebaggery he hides behind. He really can’t be around someone who’s hurt or ill without wanting almost desperately to help them, and it’s not just a function of his power. He’s spent most of his life trying to be what his parents wanted at the expense of his own natural inclinations - which are to be a genuinely caring, open-minded person who wants to help others. He’s also a devoted friend (if he manages to make any), a good student, and a talented violinist and cellist. Character Weaknesses: Josh is, to put it bluntly, a bigot. He’s been indoctrinated into it for his entire life and he honestly doesn’t know how to be anything else. This comes with a healthy dose of self-loathing and shame, and an abandonment complex that makes it difficult for him to trust or get close to people. His ‘friends’ attacked him and tried to kill him, his parents disowned him without hesitation or remorse...and he deserved it, because he’s a monster. How can he trust anyone else, especially when all the current options are freaks and monsters just like him? Character History: Josh grew up comfortably upper middle class and had what he considered a perfectly normal childhood - music lessons and Boy Scouts, little league and Pop Warner football...whoopings from his older brothers, beatings with his dad’s belt when he set so much as a toe out of line, and meetings of his parents assorted anti-mutant groups. He grew up listening to his father rant about ‘the mutant menace’ and his mother explain how they were an abomination in the eyes of God and needed to be scourged from the earth and he learned to parrot it all back like the good little boy he was. By the time he was twelve his parents had decided that attending meetings and writing letters to senators and congressman and schools and churches and newspapers wasn’t active enough. His father and older brothers joined an organization called the Reavers, which promised to actually do something about ‘the mutant problem’. That something turned out to be roaming the streets of M-town after dark and attacking any mutants who seemed to be safe enough targets. By the time Josh was fourteen they took him along, making him watch - and eventually help - as they beat helpless mutants almost to death. Or at least Josh hoped it was only almost to death, he never had the courage to check. It was around the same time that other things in Josh’s life started changing, or maybe that was just when he started noticing the changes. Despite being just as active as ever, he never seemed to get bruises or cuts or scrapes anymore, and he hasn’t had so much as a sniffle since he was twelve. Even his dad’s strappings didn’t seem to hurt all that much once they were over. It wasn’t until he got tackled wrong at football practice when he was fifteen that Josh started to suspect there might be something actually wrong with him, though. He was sure he heard something snap, and it hurt worse than anything he’d ever felt. His coach wrapped his arm in ice and his mom drove him to the ER...but by the time they got there it didn’t really hurt anymore. By the time he saw a doctor there was no sign there had ever been anything wrong with his arm at all. Being a sissy over nothing, plus wasting his mother’s time and his father’s money on the ER co-pay, earned him a beating that night. A beating that hadn’t left so much as a red spot on his back or ass by the time he got a chance to check in the bathroom mirror. It just got worse after that. He started feeling things when he touched other people, like something in him wanted to reach out and...do something to them, and he became distant and withdrawn, unwilling to touch people if he could avoid it for fear that whatever it was inside of him would find its way out and everyone would know what he was. He lived in terror, certain that if his family and friends ever found out what a monster he was he’d be as good as dead. He’d just turned seventeen when he found out the hard way just how right he was. A ‘special’ trip to M-town with his brothers and some friends in celebration of his birthday went horribly wrong. By the time it was over his oldest brother had almost died and he’d outed himself as a mutant by healing him...and then both his brothers and all of their friends had done their damnedest to beat him to death in a dark, filthy alley. The only thing that saved him was the way he curled around his head and managed to take all the worst blows to his body and extremities. By the time he worked up the courage - and the energy - to get back home the next day his parents had reported him as having been attacked and abducted by ‘a crazed mutant’. His father made it perfectly clear that it would have been better if he’d just died in the night, and that the only reason he wasn’t finishing the job this brother’s had started was in deference to his mother’s delicate sensibilities...but that wouldn’t stop him for long if Josh didn’t get the hell out of his sight and never come back. | ||||||||||
