Draco wanted to pass out.

He had apparated to Iceland, extremely jetlagged, only to be carted off to some conference hall to give an opening speech. There wasn't even a moment's rest, no ten minute power naps, no cup of coffee.

He had planned on taking the rest of the afternoon at a more relaxed pace, but several important ambassadors insisted on taking him out for tea.

By the time they were done bombarding his weary head with ideas, it was just after dinner. And instead of being able to finally, finally pass out on his luxurious bed, he knew he was supposed to call Parvati.

It was 8:30, and he was supposed to be calling her at this exact moment. Wearily, he stared at the clock. 8:31.

Suddenly, the phone rang.

Parvati Malfoy had been holding up pretty well. For her first day away from her husband since they had been married, she had managed to call their contractors and give them some specifics as to the new foyer they were have placed, visit her sister at school and meet with an investor for their political party.

But now, it was night. And Malfoy Manor seemed large and lonely.

So, she was clutching the phone and ringing her husband. At his tired hello she pouted, "You didn't call, Dragon." Parvati chided quietly.

Draco was torn between crying and laughing. If they had been face to face somehow, he would have hidden under the blankets from his wife.

He chose to laugh. He couldn't even bear to greet her.

But really, what would Draco Malfoy do if his wife was not so persistent? Despite how insane he thought she was, despite how much she made him sprout gray hairs, she honestly made him a better man.

Parvati Malfoy thought that Draco Malfoy's laughter was the best thing in the world. So low and rumbly, she could almost picture his handsome face at the moment. Although much more common in these days, Parvati still remembered the days when loud-completely-amused-and-happy-in-the-moment was a rare commodity from the blonde. As such, she took great pleasure in hearing him.

"Draco! Why are you laughing!" She questioned mock-crossly, her face breaking into a pout before she too started laughing. Although Parvati could at times be overly clingy, sensitive and princessy she was also wry enough to be aware of it herself and her facade would break when she became so aware of it that it became amusing to her as well.

She too began to laugh, "Stop!!! Draco!! You're so mean to laugh-" But all the while her own tinkling laughter rang.

Once they had both calmed she giggled and followed that up with a: "Hmph. Well, you didn't you know!" Her tone was cheeky and defiantly teasing.

Draco fulfilled his role too.

"It's 8:31, Parvati." Normally, if Draco had all of his energy, he'd quickly adopt a dominating rhetorical style, and explain how watches were usually all off by a few minutes, how one minute wasn't a big deal anyways, etc etc. But he left it at that, and rubbed his forehead.

"How was your day? Set the house on fire?"

She twirled a lock of her hair around her finger as she looked at the ceiling of their bedroom. "Yes, but I'm fairly sure you've been in your room for a few minutes, feeling exceedingly tired and wishing you could sleep instead of call me." Parvati knew her husband too well.

"Noooo, I did lots actually. I met with Gerald Wickenheimer and he said that they will be sending the investment by the end of the week and that his wife found us completely endearing. I told you that hand delivering those presents for Minnie was a much better idea that taking them for dinner. Old people always love me because I love them."

"Back into divination?" he teased. In truth, he did want to fall asleep, but knew it would upset his wife. Wasn't is a strange world? A world where Draco Malfoy put someone else's feelings before his own.

"Old people always love you because you love them," Draco echoed slowly, examining his hands. "That's not exactly how I thought you'd end that sentence. I thought you'd say old people love you because you convince them you can tolerate their repetitive stories and stale cookies." Sitting on the edge of his bed, he took off his shoes and kicked them off to the side. "What time is it in London?" he asked, not caring to figure it out himself.

Parvati curled in deeper under their soft covers, closing her eyes for a moment. "I wish I could kiss you right now." She pouted, her voice bordering on a sullen whine.

"Old people's stories are the best!" She stated with great conviction, "And they're so kind and innocent and caring. The Wickenheimers are lovely."

Parvati giggled, "Same time as you, Dragon. You know nothing." Silly men. "How was your day? Are you very tired?"

"You're not going to force me into having phone sex with you, are you?" Draco mock sighed. "I'm starting to feel objectified."

"Now you're just being stereotypical," Draco tsked. "All old people are not so kind and innocent and caring. Just how not all little girls with pink ribbons are innocent and sweet."

"I am kind of tired," he lied, loosening his cuff links. "Too tired to even order a massage in-room. Did you eat dinner? I hope you're eating more, instead of picking at your food because you don't like what the house elves have been making lately." Perhaps it was complete exhaustion, but, "You're beautiful and I don't want you to get too thin."

Parvati flushed. "Shut up!" Her lips twisted together in thought as they always did when the thought was fairly agonizing to admit that she liked something she felt she shouldn't. "Why, do you think it'd be fun?" Her voice was breathy.

"I was innocent and sweet." Parvati stated factually, "You just came around and corrupted me horribly."

"My poor baby-" She cooed, almost unable to stand thinking that her husband may be so fatigued and here she was, so far away, to be unable to do anything about it. "Hm. Well, make sure they don't send any witch if you do order one. You're much too handsome to be allowed such things."

Smiling contentedly, Parvati's eyes grew heavy listening to her husband's voice, as early as it was. It was his honest statement that had her wiggle nervously and tell the subsequent truth, "Well...I had a sandwich for dinner. I just haven't like the menus lately, I will change them soon." Without her husband to keep a watchful eye on her, Parvati was prone to eating smaller proportions. It wasn't her fault she didn't have a large appetite!

"Normally yes," Draco laughed, always amused by his wife's excitement. "But I'm actually that tired." Reaching into his jacket pocket, he took out an unopened carton of Gauloise cigarettes. Smacking the box against his wrist before opening it, he lit it silently with his wand and inhaled deeply. The tip glowed red at him.

"Somehow I doubt that. You were bratty as a child. The worst."

Draco did think it peculiar that Parvati was so strict with him when it came to his encounter with women. He was glad to have the cigarette. It made him easy tempered.

"A slice of toast with marmite isn't a sandwich," Draco reminded his wife, tapping some ash into the crystal tray on his nightstand. "Do you miss me?" he asked teasingly, his voice lowering a tone.

Parvati's mouth dropped. Her husband? Too tired for something sex related? Gosh, he was exhausted! "Well, there's always tommorrow." She said smiling, wondering what that sudden smack noise was. Her suspicious mind made her jump to the radical conclusion that he was smoking (having seen him do the expert wrist slap before) but since she heard no lighting sounds, put the thought away.

"No way. Not even possible. I could never have been the worst, with you stomping around town." She teased.

Parvati was strict because Parvati was clever, and she would never let herself become another statistic of yet another pureblood wife who was cheated upon.

"It wasn't marmite...." She trailed off, "It was peanut butter..."

As he asked her the question, Parvati's heart squeezed a little and she turned, burying her face slightly in her husband's pillow. "Yes."

"So much, Draco." And despite herself, tears sprung into her eyes and her breath caught, "I miss you, I don't want you to leave again."

Draco hadn't smoked in a long time. It was impossible, living with Parvati. The feeling was beautiful. All the little stressful thoughts of the day rearranged themselves neatly in front of him, suddenly manageable. The taste was a bit strong though. He wondered how he ever got used to it before.

"You were the worst because you were deceptive. At least I was open and honest," he replied after exhaling.

"Oh, at least you've got one ounce of protein in you," Draco deadpanned, sighing. "It'll hurt to sleep with you if you become all skin and bones." His syllables blurred together in a lazy drawl, as opposed to the articulate staccato of his words when he was angry or at the office.

"You know this is going to become a regular thing," he sighed, sounding stern. But inside, he felt a pang of guilt. Malfoy Manor was a very large place to be staying at, alone.

"Openly and honestly hexing everyone, you mean." Parvati responded flatly. "Face it Dragon, you fell in love with me because I was sweet and innocent."

"Well, you'll always have my breasts for padding-" She returned smartly before flushing as a small house elf had just popped in with a hot chocolate she had thought to ask for earlier.

Her fingers curled tighter around the phone, having not received the equal missage response, "Regular?" Parvati's voice was small. "But why? No, I don't think so." Tears had wet her eyelashes flat against her cheeks. "I miss you-"

Sometimes, when Draco pulled the stern husband routine, Parvati fell seamlessly into a slightly irrational, pouting personality. "-No more conference trips, please?"

She didn't tell him of how the portraits about the house all tutted knowingly, providing comments on how Malfoy Men always strayed while away, or if they were the type to be loyal; dabbled in shady businesses at worst and simply wanted away from their wife at best.

"And you used my distraction to spill juice on dresses that were prettier than yours, and to take extra cookies." Draco rolled his eyes and chuckled despite himself. "Parvati, you might have been innocent in a... sexual way," he burst out laughing, "but I never underestimated you. You have a little bit of a brat in you too." Allowing the cigarette to dangle from his lips, he rubbed his shoulder a bit. "All that money brings out the brat in everyone."

When Parvati and Draco had this contest, or rather, when Draco had this contest with himself--seeing who could miss who more, it was always in person. Parvati would see the way Draco looked at her, and it would betray his thoughts.

But the silence said nothing.

"Parvati," he sighed. "You know that's impossible. I'll look irresponsible if I don't go."

To be honest, Draco had considered allowing his wife to come on occasion. But a bit of distance was good. Seriously.

She giggled brightly, "I love cookies!" Parvati's expression was delightfully cheeky. Not a mean girl by nature, she did however have a brat streak that ran through her. Fortunately for Draco, he knew how to handle it, and in their union, they were each free to be their own brat self. "Yes of course. Well, when it's all said and done, we turned out well, did we not? You were an awfully cute brat, though-" She thought fondly, "I hope our kids will look just like you...but we'll raise them without the whole money spoiling them though."

Practically pained, Parvati looked around their massive bedroom as Draco spoke, and curled up into a smaller ball. Although she knew her husband loved her, she was insecure enough to need a certain amount of reassurance. When none came, she sniffled. "But-but-I've never slept without you before!" Parvati was at a loss as to how to describe just how big an issue this was.

"Raise them without the whole money spoiling them?" Draco echoed, a stream of thoughts blazing through his head. Parvati would suffocate their children, no doubt, and try to instill fluffy morals into them. Inadvertently, she would also raise them into expecting to get what they wanted all the time-- and their idea of relating to people from all socioeconomic backgrounds would be to smile patronizingly at the novelty of their 5 galleon sweaters.

Draco finished his cigarette and put it out.

"I'm not leaving," Draco said finally. "It's only for one night this time." Then, "I'll never leave you." His voice was serious and low.

"Well, yes! I don't want them to be so entitled. They'll be lovely and kind with your eyes and my hair." Parvati had her own stream of thoughts blazing through her head. Images of chubby little babies and well mannered, kind children. "Draco, I can barely wait! You will look so hot with our little baby in your arms." What? What was so wrong with five galleon sweaters? They were ever so quaint!

Her eyelids lowered at her husband's serious statement and Parvati's body felt warm. "Promise?" It was not a demanding command for affection or reassurance. Instead, Parvati's voice was just as serious and low, asking for a vow. "I'm sorry I'm being so silly-" The tears kept sliding down her cheeks, "I'm crying and it's so frivolous, but I love you so much it feels like an ache."

"But what on earth will they do if they find someone who's dressed better than them?" Draco asked innocently. He did not find himself looking that attractive with a baby in his arms. In fact, Draco was positive that he'd be covered in urine at one point. Babies were petty like that.

"I promise." Shaking his cigarette carton so a smoke neatly slid out, Draco placed another between his lips before lighting silently once again. Perhaps he was glad to finally smoke, as he wanted. Or, perhaps this was his own coping mechanism. "What shall we do when I'm back, then?" he suggested. "We haven't gone out in a while. Too busy christening the house," he flirted, but there was no toothy grin on his lips. Instead, a lazy expression graced his aristocratic features. Only the left corner of his haughty lips was turned upward the slightest degree.

"They won't, because they have me as their mother to make sure they're the best dressed people around." Her eyes were starry thinking of all the extra shopping she'd be able to do. "And even if there is one slip up, then they have you as a father and you can take care of things" Parvati lowered her voice into a comedically gruff tone.

"Well, we haven't christened the library yet, so that might be first on the list-" Parvati flirted back, her tears slowing though her voice still caught. "I'd love to go out, there's a Quidditch game next weekend in Ireland we could go to."
