Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry

And, as they had discussed, the next day was back to work. She had gone to Cary first, the intention to find Kerry, but with a pleasant sidetrack of talking with the scientist. He did, in fact, have some poking and testing that he wanted to do --something about more theories that the journal brought up -- so Syd forced herself to stay still for the prodding. It worked, for the most part, particularly after Cary saw her trying and eased the tension with a little talk. Simple stuff, how he thought she could continue harnessing her ability and an unknown echo of
what Hank had said about part of it being psychological. The conversation also turned toward the light saber, with questions about whether she felt any after effects and if she'd like to continue working with that. Knowing all too well the stability that came with knowing the person you cared about could take care of herself, Cary saw nothing wrong in giving both Sydney and David that peace of mind. Just in case. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worse.

Syd, naturally, was pleased to continue being his guinea pig in that respect.

Afterward, it was Ptonomy she found next, which was actually perfect because she needed to bribe him into a favor soon. And what could she possibly offer the memory man? Pancakes. He loved them but couldn't cook them. Baking was apparently more his bag. So favor was exchanged for favor, and she couldn't quite help herself in innocently asking about yesterday afternoon, which had him looking at her suspiciously before she flitted away.

It all led her to Kerry, who had been heading over to Cary and her punching bag. But sparring was so much more fun. So that was exactly what they did, an hour and a half of moving and trying to best one another, moves and tips given from the younger girl as Sydney tried to get one over her. Still didn't work; the student still had much to learn from the master. They were about to switch when Kerry brought up a good point; had she tried with someone else? Other than David, because Kerry liked not having an explosion to worry about, thanks. Syd snorted, giving a shrug, but then she got to thinking about it. Maybe she should change it up. "I should find Rudy or Ptonomy and ask."

"Yeah, you should." Kerry thought that could possibly be interesting, grinning. "You get a hold on telekinesis and could toss things at me." Rudy wouldn't.

With that thought in mind, Syd wandered over to David's bedroom, figuring he wasn't there yet but would pop his head in relatively soon. She debated telling him about the newest plan, or letting him suss it out. Mostly because she was curious whether people were the same to him when they were switched. Humming, she plopped on the bed and sat cross-legged, going over various ideas in her head as she waited.

Back to work. David's work was finally having The Conversation with the Birds about all the crazy his head was providing. Even if it was more Melanie's thing, the psychological, Oliver was a telepath and might have some insight, so as much as it distressed him to talk about it with two people in a room looking at him and trying to understand and assess and study... this was the best way to do it. Efficient or something. Two Birds (haha) one stone.

And so they talked. Every detail he could actually remembered was offered: the first time his mind split apart when trapped in his own mind by Farouk; when it happened again, Rationality returning as Anger decided to literally take the reins and push him out; then the last, some kind of bizarre arrogance and confidence that made David uneasy, a persona that had full certainty in every power at David's disposal and having no qualms about using them when the time was right. The circumstances for each of their formations he details as best he could, in case it was relevant.

The thoughts he got back were a mixed bag. Oliver, the telepath, thought they were a byproduct of his power. Telepathy and being the key phrase, as the telepathy was obviously the primary cause, but the and seemed to be the rub -- there was so much to deal with, a lot of power crammed into a person that didn't feel they should have it (Melanie's commentary) and couldn't deal with it (David's translation), that his own mind and its power was doing what it could to remain some kind of sane with it. While making him completely insane in the process.

Melanie wasn't entirely convinced it was inevitable, as Oliver thought it was. She thought there was more psychology in it, David's belief that he couldn't handle all of this making it happen as opposed to a natural side effect of telepathy and. At the end of it all David wasn't entirely sure what to think about it. Melanie set a time tomorrow to start diving in and, essentially, 'meet the family' in his head, something he absolutely refused to get into today. Another minor delaying tactic, but after being handed such conflicting viewpoints, he wasn't really feeling up to ruining what minor consensus there was upstairs by dragging every persona out to be analyzed.

So for now, he just went right back to his room to collapse and hide for a while. Which he could do with Syd there, seeing her on his bed an added benefit than truly being alone with his thoughts. Stepping in, door closed, motioning for her to scoot and make room, David said nothing as he crawled onto the bed and simply collapsed, grabbing a pillow and shoving it over his face. Why can nothing be simple? A projected thought, spoken that way so he could keep smothering himself with the pillow for a few moments longer.

Once those few moments were up, he pushed it away and sighed. "In true married couple fashion, the Birds have different views as to what's going on with my head. Oliver thinks it's permanent, Melanie isn't sure." Of course. The scientist and psychologist -- black or white versus all the grey in the world. David looked to Syd, managing a rueful smile. "How's you day been?" Hopefully better.

Looking up from her thoughts, currently the contemplation of lamps and how to fix them, Syd offered a smile in hello. But she was quick and easy in the movement of scooting over, even if the action of pillow-smothering had her amused. “Rough day at the office, dear?” The projected thought her answer, her smile turned sympathetic. The meeting must have gone awkwardly. “You’d probably be a little suspicious if things were simple for you.” Especially things of this nature. Hell, she would be a little suspicious if things went too swimmingly.

Stretching out, she turned to give David her attention fully, watching him with a tilted head for a minute. “Yelling into it might help?” A suggestion before she saw his pretty face and he went over the basics of the meeting. “Well. Shit.” She paused, pressing her lips together in thought. “Which do you think? Which do you want?” That certainly cleared up a whole lot of nothing, though. And the two schools of thought were so different that any compromising would be difficult too. She definitely understood the pillow.

“I wish I could share the relative goodness of my day.” As in push some of her good day onto his. Fidgeting with the ring sans pop, merely because she liked to do so now, Syd chuckled. “It was good, though. I talked with Cary – he poked me—“ Her facial expression shifted to show how much she didn’t like that. Ugh. “But it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. We were talking about my plan for working on my power, and he also asked if I’d be willing to continue studies with the light saber. I don’t mind being a guinea pig for that.” Obviously. “Then I found Kerry and we did our routine; except she wants to change it up and wants me to try to switch with Rudy. So I can—“ Syd paused there, moving her fingers in air quotes because of course Kerry would want this. “Throw things at her. Which means that I get to go find Rudy and ask him if he’d like to be blonde for a little while.”

“I ran into Ptonomy too.” She grinned then, adding some levity in. “Asked him how yesterday was. He knows something’s up but can’t figure it out, and it’s really funny to watch.”

This was one case where he would have loved a simple answer. A simple answer to a complicated problem. Sure, it might've sucked to have been told something like, 'Sorry, you're just crazy, deal with it.' At least closure would have come from accepting that and moving on. But now there was conflict, two opinions, confirming at least that neither of them had ever heard of this happening before. Which also sucked. Yeah, David did kind of want to yell into the pillow.

But he didn't. If he let any of what was brewing inside go, shutting it down would be difficult. Better to just... take this all in strides. Baby steps.

"I wish I knew what to think," he said with a sigh. "My 'rational mind' told me that my power made it happen, at least with him. Some kind of self-preservation, I guess." But if that was what was happening with all the others? David wondered if that was pointing to even bigger problems. Melanie's methods might help stop more from developing, but he had a fear that the personas in his head already were there to stay. "I'd love to be in one piece one day, but I'm not optimistic." That was generally how he was feeling. A blend of both -- Oliver's permanency mixed with Melanie's thoughts to stop it from getting worse. Maybe.

God. Complicated. So complicated.

Better to hear about Syd's own day, which if it was good? David was cool with. He could do the vicarious thing. Certainly sympathetic about the dislike of being poked (David didn't like being studied at all, and yet...), he listened to the rest happily from where he lay, looking up at her as she spoke. More lightsaber testing, fair enough -- he knew now to expect more calls to charge said lightsaber so his girlfriend could keep being a badass. The thought of her being a badass in Rudy form though, that had him grinning. "You'll finally be taller than me." That was his helpful commentary on that score. Rudy was at least two inches taller!

As for Ptonomy, well. "It's only a matter of time before he connects his brain pictures of how everything looked before and after to us." With a memory like that, the kind David really, really wouldn't want, it really was a mere countdown. "What'll kill him is how." And there was the true comedy of it!

"When were you thinking of tracking Rudy down?" David's eyes wandered as he scanned the various buildings of Summerland. "Looks like almost everyone's making their way to Melanie's office right now." Cary was the farthest away, but even he seemed to be en route.

There was the option of a third opinion but, in spite of thinking it, she was not going to even try to suggest that one. There were only two other people she knew who could possibly help, but that could also possibly be like having someone who by poking a beehive.

"You did say it all has mother hen tendencies. Mother henning isn't always good or whatever though, right?" Her mouth pressed in a thin line while thinking, eyebrows furrowing slightly. “Hopefully, they can at least help keep you one and three rather than one and ten or something.” There was more thinking and then she realised something, eyes wide. “You’re going to have to have group therapy, huh?” With himself. Like in the car. She studied him quietly for a minute, solemn before her mouth tilted in a half smile. “Let me know afterward and we can figure out something really fun to do.” Something fun and stupid and distracting, allowing him to talk about it or not on his own terms.

Speaking of distracting, Syd had to pause at the comment of being taller, which made her laugh. "I didn't think about that. Might have to watch out for the thin air way up there." The woes of being on the short side of average amongst giants. Nodding in agreement in regards to Ptonomy, she affected an innocent look and shrugged. “Obviously, we have no idea. We didn’t get back in until late.”

“Oh? Did we miss the memo?” Curious! But she made an amicable motion of her head. “Now can be good. You up for the entertainment?”

There were only two options. If Oliver couldn't help on the telepathic side, then that was it. But it sounded like he would be helping Melanie to explore the potential of fixing things, or stopping things from getting worse. Thankfully he hadn't just thrown his hands up, said it was done, and walked away. So... two options. David was still going to try, going to humor whatever Melanie wanted to try, just in case.

"Every time I've freaked out about something, it," the mother henning, in a sense, "goes overboard." And since he had a tendency to freak out a lot? It could keep getting worse and worse. It all boiled down to the fact that he was an incredibly imbalanced person with coping skills in all the wrong areas for the kind of life he'd been thrown into. Or something like that. But yeah, maybe, just maybe, they could put a stop to this happening again. "Melanie wanted to do that today," he replied with a roll of the eyes. "I asked if I could have a day to come to terms with the idea of group therapy with myself."

He was definitely going to need something fun to do after. "It's gonna have to be really fun to get over this special kind of therapy," he grumbled, but was smiling soon enough anyway, knowing he'd be fine with just about any distraction after something like that. Company outside of himself would be fantastic.

"It's why I'm so clumsy, obviously. Always a little woozy from the lack of oxygen." Duh. From there he simply shook his head and shrugged. "No idea what he's talking about. We just got in and crashed." So innocent. Perfectly so.

On the subject: "Maybe they're having a meeting about all the stuff moving around so mysteriously." Grinning, he sat back up and dragged himself back to his feet. "Fiiine." Dramatic for the sake of it. "Let's see you all tall and handsome if Rudy's up for it."

The grin, wide in its amusement on her face was funny. So was his advice. It was true, after all. Tugged along, she gave a small wave and then nodded at the other conversation. Air, air would be good. She stepped up to the window, staring out for a minute, and then turned to face herself. David.

"It's weird looking down so much." She was focusing on those things, the way she had to peer down instead of up. "I feel awful about it." Admitted quietly, before she added, "I know I shouldn't, but I do." She also felt frustrated, but that was because she disliked big surprises. And this was a big surprise. "It..might be a setback." She wasn't sure yet, still had to process.

Taking a breath, she smiled again, and glanced around. "No shouting or things breaking, though. That's probably good." She tugged on their fingers as well, that making her smile more. "This is good too." Syd chuckled then, eyebrows lifting a little. "I had actually thought about this; later, when I figured it out more."

"It's weird looking up." And actually understanding it this time. Processing it. Having the chance to actually let it sink in rather than being in a completely confused daze. Rather than thinking it might be some new kind of delusion that miraculously got him out of Clockworks at the same time. David had no explanation at the time, no real comprehension of what happened -- but now he did. And now he was looking at himself, at Syd, and they were in it together this time, rather than having a solid wall between them and a dead Lenny to stare at.

One thing was for certain though, as Syd offered what was happening right now, internally. An insight into all the wheels cranking in physical brain that probably wasn't in the best condition after years of abuse. Thankfully the mind inhabiting it right now was good. Bright. Incredible. "I get it," David offered, smiling sheepishly. "Remember how much stuff I destroyed trying to figure things out? How I got people trapped in my memories, in the astral plane?"

Screwing up was bound to happen. "We got through all that then, and we'll get through this now." Setback or not. "Baby steps." That was all anyone could ask of them.

The small smile turned into a bigger one as he saw his own face brighten up a little. Still weird, but at least, it was a smile. "It is pretty good," confirmed by snatching up a second hand to do the same with that one too, because they could for the time being. "Thought about another switch-a-roo, huh? Good to know it can be done without explosions." That comment was met with another roll of the eyes, smile fading for a moment. "Our favorite persona somehow took care of that and is all pleased with himself. Course, bragging to yourself is like sitting at the cool table in the cafeteria of a mental hospital." A beat. "I should know, because I never sat there."

Smile back in a flash, David took a mental step back and observed himself, distancing that it was Syd for a second. "Why didn't anyone tell me I look like a startled otter when I'm panicking? Because I do and I find that very discouraging." He'd seen it! In Melanie's office once what happened sank in. The look on Syd's face when it was his face. Startled otter, one hundred percent.

It was a good physical brain, a little worse for wear, but still good. It was keeping her motoring, walking and talking. Those were all good. David was right, and she knew that. "I know. Still frustrating? It's.." Her hand was going to slide up into the sleeve, fingers ready to curl along the cuff, but something stopped her. And it made her laugh, too. "Your hands are big." It wasn't as easy to hide them.

"I make a decision and it goes sideways." She finished her thought, offering a shrug of a shoulder, the left one. And ultimately, hiding their hands didn't matter because it was grabbed up and held by smaller hands in between them, garnering a bigger smile. "Yeah. And I know, right?" Ah, this made sense, even if it was that troublesome Four who did it. Snorting a little at the whole cool table, she rolled her eyes in good nature. "There is no cool table."

Okay, that got another laugh. "You do not. You're adorable." She paused, pressing her mouth together thoughtfully before smiling again. "Not that panicking is a state I want you in, but you're cute all deer in headlights." She looked down at herself, her mouth quicker to smile with his demeanor. "My cheeks are likely going to hurt more with your full-wattage smile."

Damn right both hands were taken. It was an opportunity to bask in both the niceness of it as well as the strangeness. Because there was absolutely no denying that it wasn't both. Nice to be able to touch in the real world, and strange that it had to be done this way. But for now? As long as there were not fire ants under the skin for either of them? Might as well use the situation. Big hands and all -- that comment met with a shrug and expression stating, guilty as charged.

"Neither of us are great at the decision-making thing." A comment of commiseration. "So you have a little more power than expected too and it went a little haywire. Or maybe it was a side-effect of something else, maybe the lightsaber." He didn't know, but there were any number of potential explanations. "Once it's all sorted again, we can both turtle up for a while and not do anything with the powers. Power-sabbatical." A beat. "Apart from my group therapy, because I know someone upstairs is going to be super disappointed in there being no cool table, so he'd gonna have to talk about it." Obviously.

Laughter. Perfect. "Otter in the headlights." And then, a little bit of extra umph into the smile, just because he could. "I'm just working 'em out for you while you keep the clouds company for me." Seriously, how did her neck not hurt doing this?

Squeezing both hands before letting one go so they could keep hold and just... walk for a bit, following the windows of the circular structure, still enjoying the openness of the area to breath and be. "This is our life." A comment that, after a moment of walking, of being, was spoken in a bright, happy tone. "I love you," David added, looking up again, smile still there. "Weirdness and all. But I think we really need to start brainstorming that life-alteringly awesome Christmas gift for Melanie. And uh, Ptonomy with a New Zealand accent? Wow."

Nope, no fire ants. Just hands, like when they were in the Room but reversed. Which was pretty cool. And because she could, she bent down and kissed his -- her -- forehead. "How do you not get a kink looking down all the time?"

The commiseration was met with a nod. Such terrible decision-makers, or maybe terrible timing. Whatever it was, it kept their lives interesting at least. She stared again, unamused, before smiling wryly. "I was perfectly fine being lower-level powered. I love you, but the over-power bit is for the birds." A beat, "Lower case birds, not upper case." To clarify.

"The clouds are very nice. Quite atmospheric." She said as they started walking, a moment taken as she adjusted her walk to not be as stride-y. Longer legs meant that the strides would be longer. "So it is." Weirdness and all. But she smiled warmly, bright eyes crinkling with the action. "I love you. And I'm thinking flowers, for one? She had a plant in her office. And the New Zealand accent is like them trying to do an American accent." A beat, "Hilarious."

"Could always ask Ptonomy to help more with that." It was a suggestion, made simply because the option was there, either answer accepted because she understood both wanting to figure things out and not wanting to let many people in any more than necessary. "Or we could try to piece things together on the big screen." Like they had with the Lenny-Benny connection. "If you want, of course." Obviously.

She grinned at the shoulder bump, nodding as she listened. "I'm glad that Melanie's better." Laughing quietly, she turned and reached out to poke her own face, eyes widening when he got to it first. So instead, she reached out for the nose. "I don't know. We should ask."

"Yeah, we probably should. Two hours is almost up, I'd imagine." But not yet. As long as there weren't any fireworks of other brands, she was okay with this. "I love you, by the way."

It was definitely an option. Both were definitely an option. David had an extremely biased preference for working through it with Syd, but in all honesty... he wasn't sure how he felt about trying. This was who he was, for better or for worse. "Thank you," words soft, smile rueful. "I'd do it with you, I'm just not sure it's such a good idea." It'd probably end up the same way, in a sense. "If I could still be with you--" A sudden, crippling shame hit him and David looked away, looked down. When all of Syd's hair fell in his face, it was tucked behind the ears without much thought.

If he could still be with Syd, he'd much rather be normal. If it meant still having a future, not having to be involved in this stupid war, Syd being safe from telepathic invasion due to lack of being involved? David would go for it in a heartbeat. The chance to be a better person, to actually deserve someone like Syd? Yeah. Definitely preferable.

And unsafe thinking, so best not go down that rabbit hole.

The return gesture, going for the nose, brought laughter though. This was the situation now, face poking as their bodies had swapped and they had the chance to find amusement in it. Poking each other, poking themselves. "Guess we should. For science." Something to mark down, another learning experience. They could find out if Melanie did really think that or if Oliver was just playing it cool like the Cool Cat he was.

"Well shucks, I love you too." David linked their hands together again and used it as a means to tug Syd up again. "C'mon. Let's check in on Melanie first, see how she's doing face-to-face. Maybe we'll switch back on the way." So might as well enjoy the hand-holding for just a little bit longer. If it'd almost been two hours of wandering, chatting, hugging, playing piano... my how time flew.

She watched him, quiet and thoughtful, and reached out without a thought to touch his shoulder, to have that connection. And gave another prod for good measure, this time fingers against cheek before leaning in to press a kiss from one set of lips to the other.

"For science," she agreed, amused at his golly-gee comment and standing up with the tug of hands. And time always flew when you were actually enjoying yourself. Once more, she experimented with the walk, not so much out of awkwardness and gendered walking, but because his legs were so long. After a tug at his fingers from her, at her own fingers from his, she let go and took a few full-stride steps. Turning around, she looked entirely too amused at the distance now between them. His full three steps were like ten of her normal ones. Okay, maybe more like seven, but still.

"C'mon slowpoke." Teased as she waited, linking arms once they were side by side again. They were off to see the wizard. The wonderful wizard of Summerland. The Birds first, so Melanie's office she walked toward. And when they reached there, this time she knocked and peeked her head in slowly. A full house might be better suited for the lab. It could handle their ridiculousness.

The connection, the poke, the kiss -- all a perfect and distracting combination that made him laugh and smile. Syd continued that trend, especially the laughing, when she took advantage of the height, of a natural walking pace for him, and proved that yes! He had long legs and could be fast when he wasn't too busy tripping over himself. That she enjoyed it, was having fun with it, was good. An understatement, but there was no better word for it, really. They had to get their enjoyment out of this somewhere, and if his body could amuse her somehow? David was all for it.

"Oh hang on, lemme slow to a saunter," was the cheeky reply, decidedly slowing his own pace for a bit, just enjoying the scenery, walking both slow and with shorter legs. Only to finally meet up and link arms, from there finding a good matching pace to begin check ins. They were still each other by the time they got to Melanie's office, but he wasn't worried. Not yet.

Inside, Melanie-as-Rudy was cradling a cup of tea, none of which had been enjoyed, but she seemed to be finding some solace in simply holding it. Oliver-as-Ptonomy seemed to be lost in thought, grinning to himself, only snapping back to reality upon hearing the knock and seeing the two at the door.

"It's incredible," that accent was still there, still striking in how bizarre it was. "I remember everything, even all my time in the astral plane. It's like the residual fog was just... lifted." David hadn't even thought of that, brows lifting at the notion. Using Ptonomy's power, yeah, he supposed Oliver's memory would come back, all of it, in a rush and a flash. And from the looks of it, Melanie seeming much calmer, there'd been some reminiscing to ease her nerves.

"Doing okay?" He asked Melanie then, stepping in and fidgeting a little. "I'm uh, David." She wasn't around for the orientation, and motioning to his own body he added, "Syd."

Melanie nodded, taking a deep breath, tone forced into something even. "I'm trying my best not to break anything. Having something in my hands seems to make it easier. Keeps the focus." Shaking Rudy's head and putting on a brave face that was more easy to recognize as one with Rudy's expressions, eyes flitted between them. "And you? Syd," specifically, eyes going to Syd-as-David in concern, "Are you feeling all right? This is quite a display of power." She wanted to make sure it hadn't exhausted, caused sickness, or otherwise negatively effected the normally shorter, blond girl who was currently fidgeting (wringing hands, arms folding, shifting weight) just next to her.

Mock offense was taken at the sauntering walk, mouth open in shock and eyes wide. Absolute shock, obviously. "I am not that slow." Said with a laugh, unworried at the moment as well. It was easier, simpler with just the two of them.

The accent still threw her off a little, a double take had while she got used to it. But the fact that it was helpful in the manner was..well, it was rather surprising. She tilted her head, mouth open again but this time in genuine surprise. She looked over to Melanie then -- Rudy's voice -- with the same wide eyed look that David often gave. But then smiled a little and gave a bit of a wave.

She shrugged though, fine. Fine and not really the one that people should be worried about. "I think I'm okay. Might be tired when I get back in?" Syd really didn't know until the switch-back. "It was.." Both of them were fidgeting now slightly, playing with her larger fingers. "Weird."

"But you're sure you're alright? You had the biggest change."

"No. And no." Damn it. Points to concede. Proactive was well and good, in controlled conditions, in normal situations. Because switching with another person was normal. Well, more normal than causing a body swapping ho-down, anyway.

She regarded Cary-Kerry for a long minute, eyebrows lifting for the same minute before allowing herself to be amused at the analogy. Bodies and souls, binary codes and the spaces in between. Nodding, she turned to David and opened her mouth to ask him the same question. But his was far more entertaining.

Oh, the places she could go with that question. There was a sly grin on David's face now, matched with an impish side glance. "Beep-bop-boop. Zeroes and ones." One conversation, one place. And you can insert your flash drive into my computer any day. Second conversation, second place. Though, she did think about that, a laugh escaping without being able to help it, even while she covered her mouth to stifle it. Or am I the flash drive technically..?

So mature.

Regaining her composure, lips pressed together in attempt to hide the smirk, Syd lifted eyebrows and held out their hand. "Think sharing thoughts?" She asked, unsure how exactly it was going to work. Sharing thoughts. Or maybe it was non-sharing thoughts. She really didn't know. "Maybe like..your quirks in your body or whatever?" That was something good to focus on, like playing with the ends of her hair or hiding smaller hands inside the sleeves of shirts.

There was absolutely no way David could stop himself from laughing. There was no stifling, no hiding, just an open burst of laughter because yes – they were so mature and he didn't stand a chance. Right now you're the flash drive. Most mature ever. Oh God.

Trying his damnest to regain composure though, it was difficult after commentary like that. The Loudermilks were blatantly confused based on what they heard, which was by all rights a very benign statement that David couldn't even begin to address in comparison. And their expressions really made it all the more difficult to stop the giggles he wanted to fall into. Which was exactly why he just stopped looking at anyone and tried to focus on equally benign things – the floor, for example. Boring old floor.

Cary-as-Kerry, still openly confused about what was so funny, looked at David for a moment longer before returning attention to Syd-as-David. "This is brand new territory, I'd suggest trying just about anything outside of David using his power to fix it. The less psychic influence, the better. This is exactly how we learn our powers and master them, through trial and error." He felt the need to emphasize the error part because it was never flawless. Never. "If it would help, I'd be happy to go into detail of how many errors Oliver experienced. No one starts as a master."

That actually had David sobering up a little. He could only imagine what Oliver might have gone through... though, considering the sixties and the sheer amount of drugs going around back then...

Unless Oliver had been stupid enough to get into uppers at all. Then he would've been asking for traumas and errors.

A grin appeared at his response, and she was about ready to keep the banter going when she focused, really focused, on David’s actions. Well, that was certainly a strange sight, head tilted in curiosity and a little bit of awe at watching herself laugh so openly and struggle so much to keep its composure. He was so cute. It didn’t matter what body he was in. Her smile turned into an amused smirk as she watched David stare at the floor in order to try to keep it together. Teenaged terrors in adult bodies, with mental notes passed back and forth and the most amazing game of Who Cracks Up First ever.

Which Sydney won, of course, but only barely this time. She couldn’t stop one smile or another if she tried, eyes crinkling in mirth while she tried to shrug off the laughter to the Loudermilks, faking innocence poorly. But then Cary-as-Kerry returned his attention back to her, and the person with wild, almost-auburn hair took a breath and tried to focus again. Syd nodded, thinking about what that meant exactly – or rather, how she could apply it exactly – then looked to her partner in crime and smiled wryly. “You heard the Cary; my mess to fix.” The statement was light, but the words pointed to a certain persona who liked to take matters into their own hands. It was her thing, so she had to be the one to figure it out.

The question was how. Okay. Trial and error, emphasis on the latter. It was okay if you failed, Sydney.

Hah. Easy to say, less easy to believe.

Fidgeting for a moment, she took David’s hand easily in hers and decided to first try what she had mentioned earlier. Think about the quirks and things done by the correct body. If she was a flash drive (sans any childish innuendos that could be pulled from that) then it would be like switching files, right? Or something. Swinging their hands idly, she began to think about being back in her own body, the feeling of her own hand through her own hair and the motion and sensation of playing with the ring still around her index finger. She even closed her eyes to focus more.

After a few minutes of not feeling anything change (new center of gravity or the like), she opened one eye and then the other and sighed. Failing was okay, she reminded herself. Why was it always easier to be encouraging to people who were not you?

David had a feeling he would always lose the game of Who Cracks Up First. At least when it came to the incredibly immature things -- he didn't have much time to mature in-between all the time spent using whatever made time and noise melt away. Which, really, was fine. He was adult enough to function okay, and wasn't that the most important thing? He could function. Ish. Besides, apparently Syd was just as bad on the maturity level; they were fine.

The statement was duly heard though, even if there was distinct commentary in return. A simple comment of but I could fix this that was answered simply by reminding that Syd said it: if you can't respect her wishes, then fuck you. Essentially. The response in return was a mutual nod of understanding. He'd had to figure out his own messes, help coming from different avenues, none direct or fixing things for him. This was no different, help could come in all kinds of forms.

For the first test, David held Syd's hand, hoped for the best as their hands swung. He watched as Syd closed her eyes, his eyes, and... sadly nothing happened. First tries rarely went well. But again, no explosions, no fires.

Smiling encouragingly at that sigh, he tugged on Syd's hand to get her attention. "We can keep trying. Different methods, maybe work with Oliver and Ptonomy now to go over what happened, see if that helps?" Find what went wrong and tackle it that way? They had some time left to kill until three hours were up, might as well make that time useful and start getting answers... maybe... before anxiety set in.

Functioning was important! And they could do it, for the most part. They got their asses out of bed each morning, and were working on being contributing members of their community – in between making each other laugh and giggle at really immature jokes. Perfectly fine. Smiling over at the tug of fingers, she nodded, as uncertain as it was. “Just need to get my stubbornness in full swing.” Working backwards could work, so she nodded again – this time more firmly -- at the suggestion of visiting the Memory people.

Kerry-as-Cary leaned into her own other half, both strangely comfortable and itching to get back to herself. It was funny, made more funny by watching Cary figure her half out, but she didn’t want to hurt Cary, so hadn’t even gotten to get any punching bag time in. And that was annoying. “You’ll get it.” She said easy-peasy, giving a shrug. “You have to.” It was that simple to Kerry; whether it happened now or later, you had to get done what needed to be done.

Kerry-Cary had a point, and she knew that. It was just getting there. "Yes, Sensei." Syd droned, half smiling. "Thanks." This said to everyone, arm linking with David again.

"Let's try option number two." With a wave to the Loudermilks, and assurance that they'd return, out they went back towards Melanie's office. Memory guy first and then guy who knew how to work with the memories. That made sense, right?

"Thank you." She smiled down at him, "For letting me deal with this." She had no doubt that he would, especially after she specifically asked, but it was still nice to extend her appreciation.

"Teaches me for not listening to you," she replied with a smile, musing at how her voice in her own ears matched up with listening to her voice outside of her ears. She didn't speak as deeply as she thought. Huh! And, obviously, wasn't as rumbly-vibrating as the even-deeper voice of David was.

Okay. Helping hand. Safe and sound in their cozy hiding place. She hummed a little, trying to both go over what she had done and yet not overthink the matter, and then nodded. "I can do this." And, if not, she could get her ass up and go visit everyone to do it face-to-face. Shaking her shoulders a little -- it took even Syd a moment or two to get used to her own skin again -- she closed her eyes again and tried to do the same thing for everyone else that she had for them. Each body was pictured in her brain, and slowly, she started nudging them all back to their proper places.

It took a little longer, but there were more of them. And as soon as Syd felt that she had everybody in order, like finishing the picture in one of those sliding tile puzzles, she peered at David curiously. And hopefully. "If I messed up again, I'm hiding in here for a week." Just so he knew.

"Yes it does." Now he was being completely cheeky, teasing one hundred percent. David knew though, he did -- he knew how difficult it was believing in yourself, especially when it came to unexpected developments of powers. He still hadn't gotten the hang of all that, he couldn't expect Syd to deal with it smoothly either. It was scary, it was overwhelming, and it added to the disquieting notion of not knowing yourself.

But there was no doubt in his mind: Syd could do this. "You can," he agreed, tone back to completely and wholly confident, keeping things chill and calm, no pressure at all in their little blanket fort, isolated from the world -- a safe place where the cold didn't matter, staring eyes couldn't see, and anyone who tried to invade would be kept right out, thank you very much. Their space, their mini-home until a bigger one could be found somewhere.

Watching the others with his mind's eye, he observed the process as it happened. Consciousnesses being urged back to where they belonged, slow in some ways, ways that couldn't be perceived, but very quick to those involved. It was incredible, a hell of a thing to watch. Upon completion, everyone back in place, David looked to Syd with a grin. Her comment, sweet and sad at the same time, completely unneeded. "Everyone's back where they belong, safe and sound in their own bodies again."

Leaning in, smile reaching his eyes, he added for good measure: "You did it. All you." No outside influence, no push from any whistling bastards, all her. Her own strength, her own power. "Maybe we should keep the fort for the rest of the week though, to celebrate, rather than hide in." Celebrate and bask. At least, that's what David would be doing, feeling the utmost level of pride and amazement in Syd. This was an incredible thing, after all! She'd been able to, however accidentally, swap an entire room of people in mind and body, and remotely swap them back. That was a hell of a thing -- all done in the span of a few hours. Less than half a day.

Waiting for his reply, Syd bit her lip absently, then smiled a very learned-from-him bright smile at the results. Thank god. And the fact that it was actually all her, the help offered appreciated but pride taken in doing something so scary by herself, made her smile even more, head ducking down for a minute to get herself together.

"I'd like that." Keeping the fort for celebratory purposes, hot chocolate toasts and junk food feasts to mark the misadventure of her own accidental making and the strange but kind of fun times that came with it. And also that she was able to switch back herself, rather than relying on the passage of time.

Stretching out normal-length legs (normal for her anyway!) she shifted and laid down on the floor, elbows up and open palms propping her head up so she could still see David. "Thank you, for believing in me." He knew, she knew that he did -- it meant the world to have someone who actually fully believed in you for no other reason than they cared that much.

"So," conversation changed paths naturally, if with an amused tone. "My idea for the day turned out weird...you get to pick the activities for the rest of the day."

A fair bit of knowledge gained throughout the day, to be sure. Learned in a scary as hell way, yes, but learned nonetheless. David was glad to be back in his own skin, and he was sure everyone else was too, the sudden swap left for them to figure out and deal with on their own. Right now? He had every intention of keeping their isolation exactly as that: isolation. The cozy kind. The kind where it could remain stress free and they could appreciate what had happened in more relaxed terms.

And keep doing so, as the fort remained for the week. Totally deserved, totally awesome. And totally needed for a full recovery.

David stretched out as well, glad to be able to fully appreciate longer limbs, shorter hair, all that jazz. "I always will," he answered easily, laying down beside Syd after a moment, smiling brightly at her. "Never had a single doubt in my mind. Easy." Believing in her was truly easy, because somehow or another she'd always believed in him. How she managed, he also didn't fully understand, but that was a big part of the mystery of love. Their romance of the mind. Their awesome bond.

Now in charge of the rest of the day, David couldn't help but grin as an idea that had been floating in his head came right back to the forefront. With everyone back as themselves, namely himself and Syd... it made it easier. "Can I see that ring again?" Once a ring pop, now just a fun bit of jewellery that Syd seemed to have taken a shine to due to its comfort. Even David hadn't thought much about it when in her body -- its comfort truly on the level where someone who had never worn a ring before didn't notice it. "There's something I've been meaning to try with it." A further explanation. Sort of.

"Your powers have had enough spotlight today, now it's my turn." A little more, but the rest he kept gladly to himself, simply smiling as they lounged in their blanket fort after one hell of a day.

Oh, she would want to check in on everybody sometime. But that was later, much later. They'd all have their own self-reacquaintance and thoughts of the day to go through anyway, so might as well use that reasoning as an excuse for the quasi-selfish want to stay put. Cozy isolation with warm blankets and feelings was exactly where Syd planned to stay for a good portion of the rest of the day.

Their belief in one another was sort of two snakes biting each other's tails, feeding into each other as much as anything else between them did. And while she wasn't sure if she'd ever fully understand, it was something that Syd was okay with not fully understanding. "Still, thanks all the same."

She cocked her head in her hands, hair falling over her shoulder with the motion, but obliged the request, sitting up to do so. Sliding the ring off of her finger, she placed it between them both -- apologetic smile appearing because of that, but hoping he'd understand. It wasn't a slight to him at all, just a minor precaution after a long day.

"Oh? Do tell, Mr. Haller." She smirked playfully, curiosity definitely piqued with his interest in displaying what wonders he could do.
