Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Sirius had been pondering and contemplating and just simply thinking deep thoughts as summer had progressed and finally had come to a logical solution to his problem. He'd lie. No, it wasn't lying exactly. Just... a means of conversation. Yeah, that sounded good.

This was all James's fault, he supposed. His friend had chattered for years about Evans only to *finally* give up last semester. Thank Merlin. But bloody he'll if it didn't plant thoughts about the redhead in his own mind. Sure, she was a looker; any wizard could see that. He wanted to be her friend. Even if she hated his best mate. Details to be worked out later. That was all.

Sirius has been lying on his back on his bed pondering the mysteries of life when a stroke of genius hit him. He rolled onto his stomach and reached into his night stand abd pulled out a quill and parchment. He quickly scribbled 'Evans, I'm having a horrid time with my' he paused and cocked his head. What would be plausible 'transfiguration assignment.' Sirius couldn't help but laugh. 'Think you could help? Thanks, Sirius.' That seemed to okay. Sounded legitimate. Or may be she would see right through him. He made good marks in that subject.

He pondered this while looking for his owl, and once he found said bird, sent off the letter. No regrets. At least, for five or so moments.

Did Petunia have to be the worst person on the planet? Lily thought she might. Her sister had been a nightmare since Lily received her Hogwarts letter, and when there was a break in the term that forced her homewards again she found herself grumpy until again she could be away from her sister.

The fact that Petunia thought she was a freak hurt Lily more than she could ever say, so she avoided her sister and said nothing on the matter to either her mother or father not wanting to put them in the middle. Most of the time she stayed in her room, going out for the occasional long walk in the forest near her home, although now that Severus had decided he hated her, the place that had once been her childhood sanctuary was a very lonely place indeed.

She’d been sprawled out on her bedroom floor, legs up on the bed, hair everywhere, nose in a tawdry Muggle romance novel she’d gotten from the library earlier that day. There were only a few weeks of break left, and she decided to pass the time reading the most ridiculous books she could find – this one about a disgraced lady of the court turned reclusive beekeeper being swept off her feet by a rakish baron was particularly hilarious. As the reclusive beekeeper’s bosom heaved and Lily was snickering there was a tapping at the window.

Lifting her gaze towards the source of the sound she wasn’t exactly shocked by the sight of the owl, although she hadn’t been expecting any post either. After the window was opened and the owl was settled on a perch she kept for birds bringing she disappeared for just a moment, bringing the creature a dish of water before she sat on the floor and read the note.

“Ha!” the sound broke the silence and gave the owl a little startle, looking at the bird she asked it to wait for just a moment and headed over to her desk, quickly scrawling her reply.

“Black –

If your idiot friend Potter put you up to this go take a long walk off a short pier.

Otherwise, sure.

Lily.”

The letter was rolled up and after it was secured to the owl she sent the bird on its way, returning to the reclusive beekeeper's heaving bosom once more - wholly not expecting further correspondence.

Sirius hadn't been expecting such a fairly quick reply; he figured Evans was doing whatever it was that Evans did during the summer with Muggle friends. He decided to let his owl rest and walked up to the Owlery with her reply. Sirius let out a laugh as he read it; she did have a point about that... but she wrong, for once.

He squeezed his reply below hers; 'This doesn't involve James. I'm at the school right now. Uh... what'd you get as the answer for ... all of it?'. Sirius honestly had no idea what to ask her. To come to the school? To meet her in Muggle London? The Leaky? School letters would be arriving shortly, he figured. 'I have no idea where to meet, if at all. Figure it out.' Oy. That last bit sounded harsh so he scratched it out. 'Should we meet?'

Sirius was certain she'd say no.

Meet? Meet Sirius Black for homework help? Lily’s impossibly green eyes narrowed at the prospect and she tried to be skeptical and not smile a doomed undertaking from the get-go. It was great that Potter wasn’t using him to bother her,

What would the disgraced beekeeper do? Apart from heave? Erm. Maybe a fictional disgraced beekeeper was not the best source of wisdom, scratch that.

Of course she wanted to meet! She had no ulterior motive for it – the summer was long, lonely, and boring beyond belief to Lily Evans, and when his horrible friend wasn’t with him Sirius Black was good company in his way. Some of her friends might even be a little bit envious of her when term started again and she could tell them about this little exchange.

A reply was quickly penned and she sent the owl on its way –
“Meet? You must be awful at transfiguration if you need help in person. – Lily.”

Though she didn’t say so in the note as soon as the owl had departed again she was heading down the stairs to find her Mum and Dad to ask them about going back to school tomorrow. She wouldn’t have to explain herself, while Petunia thought she was a freak her parents thought she was an absolute marvel, and rarely questioned their daughter’s magical duties. If she needed to head back early, then by jove she would!

Sirius had received the next reply and returned the owl with a short 'Tomorrow then'. What was he thinking?

The next morning found him bright and early, much to his chagrin. He knew Evans should be coming around at some point, by when? He had ate breakfast and didn't see her. Following his shower (in which she was not in his bathroom; he had no idea why he thought she'd be there), he grabbed his bag with his transfiguration work (technically, it was already done. He didn't become an illegal animagus only to fail the subject) and headed onto the grounds.

Sirius had been wandering for a few minutes when he spotted a familiar redhead not too far off. What was she doing? He walked over to her before plucking the book her nose was stuck in out of her hands, "Hello Evans. What have you got here?" Sirius looked to the title, brow furrowing, "What in the hell..." he trailed off.

Draped across the length of one of the benches outside, Lily was enjoy the warm breezy day, possibly one of the last ones of summer she was fully engrossed in her ridiculous book.

Lord Brindlemore was just about to captivate the attentions of our heroine as she tended to her honeycombs when her book was abruptly snatched away forcing her to blurt out a startled “Hey!” as she leapt to a sitting pose.

Seeing who it made Lily glare a little although she was smiling a bit, “The Buzzings Of Passion,” she said, as though it were the most obvious thing in the world, “and don’t bloody lose my page Black!”

Sirius mouthed the title, a horrified expression on his face. "You're concerned about losing your page?" He didn't know Evans was into such things. She was... that wasn't right; not at all! "This is a trashy muggle romance novel!" he exclaimed, flipping to her page.

"What's a bosom?" he questioned her, forgetting all about the Transfiguration homework for the time being. How many girls had wanted to have this conversation with him and *show* him what a bosom was? Evans was an odd witch, for sure. "And why is it heaving?" Just because he knew what a muggle romance novel was didn't mean he knew all the words inside.

“Of course I am!” she shot back with a huff, although her expression was one of definite amusement even though she rolled her eyes at his keen observation about the sort of book it was, like half shirtless man and the damsel gripping one of his muscular legs on the cover wasn’t a dead giveaway. Lily knew Sirius was from a proper wizarding family – maybe they didn’t have bad romance novels. How terribly sad for them!

Crossing her arms over her chest at his question she shook her head, “well if you don’t know I’m certainly not going to tell you, and I pity your next girlfriend very much,” she sniffed, flicking her long red hair over one shoulder. Truthfully she had no idea why the reclusive beekeeper’s bosom was heaving all the time either – but he didn’t need to know that.

Sirius filed that information away; he'd look it up later. "Right. Transfiguration," he said and sat next to her on the bench, slinging his bag to the ground. She'd probably knock his block off if she knew the real reason he sent her a message; just so he could talk to her and be her friend and all these other weird feelings he'd been feeling. He wondered if she knew how adorable she was when she was huffy. He'd beat up James later for being such a git.

Sirius removed his Transfiguration book and parchment from the bag, and handed her his textbook. Her book he placed on his opposite side. They were here for business, not for frivolity in the form of bosoms... whatever that could be. Remus probably knew. Sirius would later smack himself when he learned what a bosom was and all the experience he'd had with said objects.

"Teach," he said, trying to shuffle his finished material out of the way.

As he sat on the bench beside her Lily seized the chance to snatch her book back, quickly thumbing down the page she was on before she half stuffed it beneath her bottom, ensuring it would not get stolen again.

Her eyes followed him as he rifled through his back, trying not to look skeptical as he presented her with his transfiguration book. “Teach? What? Everything? Have you been comatose since first year Sirius?” another huffy sigh followed the question, and she had to wonder how he ever meant to pass a class being so lax in his studies as he was. It was her turn to steal his book now, thumbing through it briskly to try and see where he was up to, and where she ought to begin.

Sirius shrugged, "there was some essay about something that McGonagall droned on about for like... ever," he finished. Surely she didn't want more detail. Sirius knew he could probably dance circles around her with what he knew on the subject. He should have said Charms. Oh! There was an idea.

"Maybe it was Charms," he shrugged again. Sirius knew he couldn't make her mad to where she left, but nothing to let her on to his motives. "It's all the same thing, right, Evans?"

Lily couldn’t help but rub her temple in exasperation as he prattled on about the essay in question. “Its charms,” she sighed, “and you’re an idiot.” Glancing at him sideways the corners of her lips curled in a small smirk, seeming to notice for possibly the first time ever that looking at him wasn’t the most awful thing in the world. She blamed the beekeeper’s exploits for inspiring such an observation.

“Right, so. The essay was on the caterwauling charm, with the bonus subtopic of effective uses for it.” Lily handed him back the book and looked at him expectantly. “Can you think of any effective uses for the caterwauling charm? Should we go find one?” The idea of enchanting someone’s door with it struck her as rather hilarious, although Lily Evans would never prank anyone.

Sirius stared blankly at her. "What?" was his only response. That's it. He was done for. He genuinely was a bit lost; he hadn't even begun to work on his Charms assignment. He wasn't even sure he attended that class towards the end of last semester. "A cat?"

For a second Lily just stared at him after he’d answered her, her brows rising slowly. “Really?”

Sliding her wand out of her pocket, Lily aimed it towards his bag, casting the charm quickly so it would be triggered when he next opened his bag, trying not to look too smug when their eyes met again.

Sirius looked to his bag and shrugged. Of course he wanted to open it, but he wasn't about to let her win this one. He could have the patience of a saint. Sirius did flash her his most charming smile the second time she caught his eye.

Curiosity was burning in him though. What did it do?

Somehow Lily began to feel like she’d just ended up in a staring war with him, maintaining that look of prim expectation as she waiting for his will to crack and him to open the bag, her hands ready to fly to her ears as soon as he did.

Wait, why was she staring at him again? Oh well, a small matter.

Sirius was going to out-wait her. "So that charm does nothing, then?" he questioned with a mischievous grin. A part of him did not want to open that bag in case something jumped out at him. A part of him did so he could figure it out. "Why don't you open it and get it over with then?" he said nudging the bag with his foot, causing it to open. OHBLOODYHELLTHENOISE! crossed Sirius' mind before he threw a random charm (one to catch it on fire) at his bag. He'd get a new one.

She barely managed to cover her ears in time, jumping away from the bench just in time to catch sight of him setting his bag on fire in response. And then Lily simply had no choice, her legs gave out and forced her to sit on the ground as she all but erupted in peals of uncontrollable laughter, flopping backwards on the ground as she continued to laugh her head off.

Sirius finally got the noise to stop. Were his ears bleeding? "What... in the bloody hell... was that?" he asked, perhaps a might too loud. He didn't find it as funny as Lily did, clearly. He had never been so caught off guard before. He did have one rational thought amidst the vulgar language: she was gorgeous when she laughed.

Lily’s cheeks were positively crimson as she tried to catch her breath, but it seemed impossible to stop laughing. She’d never seen Sirius in such a state before, and frankly – it was the funniest thing she’d ever seen. Ambling back to her feet she reached out and touched the bench they’d been sitting on, bracing herself against it as her laughed slowly died down to the odd giggle every few seconds, shaking her head at him with her eyes bright.

“Now you can write your essay and I can go back home, can’t I?”

Sirius just stared at her as if she was crazy. "But what does it do aside from scream at me?" He honestly did not know what it did; sure, it made noise. Was that all it did was startle people? If so, as pranks go, it was limited and lame. Why would Professor Flitwick want them to write an essay on a prank charm?

“It’s a sort of alarm,” she began looking down at his smoldering bag and poking it with the toe of her shoe, moving it a bit further away from her. “You can charm a door so that when it opens – boom, and you’re alerted.” She was giving him the answers at this point, but she’d forgotten herself after all that laughter.
