053; 21 April 1980.
[Warded to Regulus Black]

I trust you have an explanation for your absence.

[Warded to Inner Circle]
Outside of the loss of a dear friend we have also lost a colleague this month. It strikes me that, pending the Dark Lord's approval, the movement of some of the more experienced and devoted of our outer circle might benefit us all at this time.

Young Rodolphus Lestrange is now the head of his family. His wife is a talented and forceful woman, and he will be taking his father's place in other areas as well. I suspect he would prove a beneficial member of our Inner Circle. Other names that have come to my mind are those of Augustus and Lucius. Both have proven themselves capable of gathering information and of leadership during these past difficult months.

I do not necessarily foresee all of them moving into the Inner Circle, and the Dark Lord will no doubt have thoughts on the matter as well, but Caracatus has reminded us that even with our experience those we fight may get lucky upon occasion. I do not wish for us to leave those talented among the next generation struggling should something happen to one or more of us.

After we settle this matter with the Dark Lord, I would suspect we will need to rearrange our mentoring system a bit as well.

Thoughts?

[Warded to Lestranges]
My wife has sent our condolences, but I wish to personally provide my own. He was a good man, strong in our cause, and I counted it a privilege to work beside him. He will be greatly missed.

The spring of the year is frequently my favourite of the seasons, but it is difficult to truly enjoy the beauty when one is surrounded by the loss of friends. And yet, my daughters seem to manage to find moments, and through their enjoyment I find some as well.

Yes, sir.

I ended my engagement with Celeste Lestrange, and was subsequently not welcome at the funeral. The entire situation was badly done on my part, sir.

Yo

I trust you have a very good reason to discontinue the arrangement your parents, both your father and Mr Lestrange wished for you and Miss Lestrange?

I had not wished to be engaged when it was finalized, and I realise that it means little when two family's honour are at stake. But after her father was murdered, Celeste wished to push up the wedding to a much sooner-date, and given the precarious state of both my affections as well as the Dark Lord's victory, I wished to focus upon the Cause rather than matrimony at this juncture.

It was poorly done, as I said, but my reasoning remains.

And yet, if we are to speak frankly, Regulus, part of the Dark Lord's victory is the security of a family line. You are the sole heir of the Black family and that security does rest with you. While I applaud your wish to focus upon the Cause, I also worry for the Black line. You have friends that you have lost -- in some causes those lines may die with them. Have you considered this in your reasoning?

I was old enough to handle losing my Father. A child would not be so fortunate, and though I know Celeste has many friends and relatives that would help her, out of the four that most immediately come to mind, only one has committed herself to serving the Dark Lord from the safety of the home, and that is Narcissa.

I understand my duties and I do not wish to neglect them, but I would wish for a more secure world. What good is the extension of the bloodlines if the children are orphans raised by who-knows-what?

There are very few of our women that are involved in the fight. Although it is not impossible that they might be targeted, it is not probable. Unless you so mistrust Celeste's ability to raise a child properly, I find this reasoning tenuous at best. My wife would not have been my choice, Regulus, but I have grown to care for Lucia greatly and I trust that should something happen to myself, she will raise my daughters and my soon to be born son as I would have done. If Celeste has, in some way or manner proven that she would not be capable of that responsibility, and the match is so unacceptable to you, then such a severing is unfortunate but necessary.

However, I wish to impress upon you that as a pure-blood and a member of one of the oldest and most respected of Britain's Wizarding family you have duties beyond what some of your compatriots may have. Your duties to the Dark Lord, and to the Wizarding World, do not rest merely upon your ability to cast an unforgivable whatever your cousin may believe and until you prove your understanding of the full extend you will have no place within the Dark Lord's inner most advisers -- a position, I confess, I had hopes you would be well suited for.

Our world is not an ideal, Regulus. That is what we fight for, but in the meantime, if the future of our families are not secured we may yet lose.

In the meantime, as you are currently unencumbered by family obligations, I would like to see you for an extra training session beginning this week. My Friday evenings are free; I will expect you at seven.
