Who: Eric Freeman and Izzy Chase.
What: Impromptu meeting.
Where: Samir’s.
When: Thursday Evening.

Rounding the corner near Samir’s, Izzy let out a puff of relief as the door of the bar finally came into sight for her. She had really tried to not go out that night, she really had. With the overwhelming stupidity of some of her managers, on what was already a short-staffed day, by the time she had finished she could not have gotten out of there quick enough. She had just about given up cigarettes, except for when she was extremely drunk, there was no way on earth she was going to try and curb her drink after a day like that too.

Pushing her way into the bar, and through the light crowd to the bar, a bright grin of relief crossed her lips when she found a stall quickly. Pulling her jacket from her shoulders, she set it on the back of the chair. Ordering two large rum and cokes, the first one was finished before the bartender even had a chance to place the second down in front of her.

“See, you are clearly far more sensible than me. I always mean to drink water but forget. A blistering hot shower, decent coffee and a bacon sandwich always seem to sort me out in the morning though” she shrugged before sinking the last of her second rum.

Raising an eyebrow at him as he mentioned his reason for moving into the area, a smile grew coyer by the moment. “Oh, you’re one of those former flyboys from up the road, are you?” she asked him, a hint of playfulness in her tone. “I’ve been repeatedly warned against you guys up at the base, growing up. At best you’re all a bunch of troublemakers from what I’ve been told”

Not that a small thing like that ever put her off, of course. Hell, if anything, it only made her run towards a lot of the guys on the base even quicker in her younger days.

Giving a smile of thanks to the bartender as he brought over new drinks for them both, he gave the guy a small nod before pushing Eric’s drink towards him.

"Eh, experience, that's all." He teased, giving her a warm smile. This chick was at least interesting to talk to, even if he got the impression she probably partied way too hard way too often. He took his next drink and listened. Then she challenged and he had to roll with that, of course. How could he not? Base guys had a reputation for putting a ring on any half-decent looking woman within 20 miles after the first date, after all.

"We get a little rowdy up there, yeah. I've done my time in the air though. Now I'm just here. Why? You like that kinda trouble?" He asked as he took his next drink.

Finding the conversation to be more enjoyable than she could have hoped for, Izzy found herself relaxing into the easy conversation. It was not often that she came across someone she could enjoy casual banter with that she didn’t already know, so she was going to make the most of it while she could. Of course, she knew that they were not all trouble up there. She had a handful of extremely studious friends she knew from up that, but it was not going to stop her from trying to tease him.

“Depends on the trouble, doesn’t it?” she responded coyly, not wanting to make it too easy for him, “Why? Do I have to be worried about you?”

"Me? Nah. Harmless." He bantered back, smiling at Izzy a little more. Eric took a bigger sip of his next drink, his guard slowly coming down just a little bit. Not a lot, but just enough to show he was interested in the conversation and ready to have some fun.

"So, you said you moved in a few weeks ago right? Where are you from before that?"

“Hmmm, somehow I don’t believe that” she retorted, before giving him a cheeky grin and taking a sip of her drink.

Chewing on her bottom lip, her head tilted to one side as she tried to remember where she had been in the blur of cities. “I’ve been in the area on and off for a number of years, I just took off travelling for a while. Spent some time in New York, Boston, Vegas, even did a few months over in Europe” she rattled off, trying to remember if she had missed anywhere.

“What about you? Where were you before now?”

She was just thinking, but why was that a little sexy? Maybe it was the way she bit her lip or tilted her head, or maybe it was the way her nose scrunched up for a second, but he liked. Then she rattled things off and made one thing clear: She was the kind of spoiled rich girl who could afford to travel, and he would just disappoint her.

"Oh you know. Here, mostly. Did six months in Syria, then more here. That whole deal."

Watching him, Izzy would have been lying to herself if the thought of some military guy wasn’t hot to her. Most of the guys she knew growing up were happy to sit around all day and never really leave their hometown. At least he tried to give something back to his community.

“Syria? That must have been interesting” she enthused, gesturing for the bartender to bring them over two more new drinks as she finished off hers.

"Interesting isn't exactly the word I'd use, but... you know." Eric found himself teasing. He went easy on this next drink, as he was starting to feel them. He was lighter and more talkative. He could tell that much, but it would be more soon if he wasn't careful, and then that would mean an uber home. For him, that was tough.

"It's like they say in those recruitment ads. See the world, meet new people. What they don't tell you is those people are probably gonna be shooting at you."

Leaning an arm on the bar, despite the three….or was it four drinks she had consumed since she arrived, her focus was fully on the man in front of her. Laughing at his comment, she shook her head at him. “No, I can imagine the whole being shot at part is probably left out for a reason. Can’t imagine many people would willingly be down for that, they probably aren’t always the type of people you’d actually want to be stood next too when that sort of thing was going on”

Realising she should probably at least attempt to pace herself, she ordered herself water, before turning back to Eric. “So, what new and exciting adventure are you on now, now that you’re out?” she asked curiously.

Izzy was pretty and easy to talk to. Eric liked that so far, even if he still wasn't ready to let anyone in too much. Ariel had done some damage and it would take time to undo it, if he ever let anyone get that close again. For now, this was just conversation and it was nice. He wasn't going to overthink it.

"Adventure? Huh. Well... Got a fresh start when I got out, so I'm trying some new things, you know? A buddy of mine owns another business here in town, so he brought me in as a partner. Minority stake, but it's something to keep me busy and it pays the bills. How about you? Where's life taking you next?"

Raising an eyebrow, Izzy had to admit that she more than a little impressed by the man in front of her. Getting out of the air force was one thing, going into business was another thing altogether. It was nice for her to meet someone who was ambitious and was willing to take a risk to do more with their life.

“A business? That sounds interesting? Do I get to know what sort of business you are into? Or, am I just going to have to happen across it on my own one day in town?” she asked curiously, wondering what on earth he could be helping to run. “For now, here. I’ve been backpacking and travelling for so long; the next adventure is learning to stay put for more than five minutes. My Dad and siblings live in town, so thought it would be nice to spend some time with them”

"Well, since you put it like that," Eric teased with mock drama, "I guess I can tell you."

He liked Izzy so far. She was fun and at least tried to have an interesting conversation. He wondered what stories she'd picked up in her travels, or what her life might have been like up to then, but he would ask about that in a moment. For now, a girl asks a question and a girl gets an answer. "So, my buddy from the Air Force owns an axe throwing range a little ways up the road. When I got out, I needed a job and a place to crash. He hooked up me up and I took some of my pension to buy in a minor stake in the business. I'm working there and there's some profit sharing stuff. To be honest, I don't fully understand it, but I get paid enough to keep a roof over my head so that's all I need."

He'd had to bite his lip to not make some remark about the money also being enough that his ex wouldn't bitch about it in the divorce, but he left that alone. He didn't want to be that guy.

"You're staying for a while then?"

“Axe throwing? Really?” she asked, caught slightly off guard. When he had said business she had expected something simple like a shop of some sort, nothing even vaguely like that. “That’s so fucking cool” she responded, slowly shaking her head. “This might be a little bold but, you are definitely going to have to tell me where that is, because that sounds like stupidly good fun” she enthused, just trying to imagine how it all worked.

At his question though, a small amount of colour graced her cheeks and she nodded her head. Yeah, I’m afraid you’ll be stuck seeing me around PVA for a little while to come. I signed a 6-month lease on the place, so I’ll be here for at least that long” she responded shooting him a small smile. “I haven’t quite figured out what I actually want to do next, so I figured until I do that I might as well save up a little money while I’m home. If nothing else it will give me enough for a plane ticket somewhere, and then I can do what I always do and figure it out as I go along”

"Yes ma'am." He mused with a grin, happy that had landed with the proper impact. In his head, an axe sank deep into the wood of its target, as if to illustrate this point. She seemed impressed, but he wasn't about to not milk free marketing like this either. Half Eric's job was to be the hype man for this thing after all, so he could talk it up and make Izzy want to check it out. "You probably passed it on the way here if you came from PVA. Next set of shops down the street from Samir's across from Whole Foods? It's the plaza that's like nothing but gyms and fitness stuff. And you definitely should come try it out sometime."

He paused to sip his drink, casual and easy at this point. If this was a work thing, that took even more of the pressure off, but Eric was already feeling much better and more at ease. "And before you say it's not for you, I should let you know we get pretty little ladies like you in there all the time. It's just a good time for everyone. Since you're gonna be sticking around anyway, why not, right?"

Pausing for a moment, Izzy’s eyes went towards the door as she recalled her walk towards the bar. Then nodding her head, her hand dropped from her hair. “Yes! I know exactly where you mean. I cannot believe I missed that it was there”

Even though she was quite sure that most girls would be fawning over a handsome guy like him, referring to them as pretty, that was not the type of girl Izzy was. While the complement was definitely not unappreciated, she found herself quite enjoying the slight banter they had been enjoying previously.

“Well, seeing as you have gone to such lengths to reassure me that I am completely unremarkable I am compared to your other clientele, then I have no reason not to go, eh?” she teased playfully, before shooting him a look that told him that she was about as far from being offended by his comment that she could be.

“Think I could schedule some time with one of the part-owners beforehand? For lessons? I would hate to make a fool of myself on the first time there” she asked, trying to play off her hopefulness she might see him again as further banter.

The way her head shook out when her hand fell out of her hair made her hair bounce a bit. Eric found that he liked the movement and her expression when she did it. Izzy had to banter back of course, and Eric wasn't going to miss a beat on that. Her look was flirty and playful, so he gave it right back happy for the banter and the playfulness.

"Oh, I never meant to imply you're anything other than exceptional. The Venus herself, dontcha know?" He cracked up as he teased, with a thick, fake Minnesota accent for emphasis and laughs. Was there a less sexy accent? Probably not. He could play that off for comedy for a minute. And when Izzy threw that out there, he was all too happy to hear it.

"You know, I think that could be arranged. What do you have going on tomorrow?"

Laughing at his accent, Izzy scrunched up her face and shook her head at him. Of all the accents he could have picked, he just had to go for that one. “The Venus, eh? Well, seeing how you put it that way, I would be a fool to stay away, wouldn’t I?” she responded, trying her best to not grin at the complement.

“I work until 4pm tomorrow, but after that I am completely free. I can come straight from work so I’m not clogging up a lane or whatever with my distinct averageness on a Friday night. Or, I could always pop up around closing time. Whatevers easiest for you”. Apart from seeming laid back, him setting the time had the benefit of it probably meaning she would get a decent amount of his attention.

"That you would." He couldn't help the banter in his normal voice now. It was everything. He grinned at her as she offered to swing by and then made that joke, as if to hammer the point home. Eric couldn't let that stand though. He leaned in just a little more, hand accidentally brushing hers. The contact was electric, though, and it added to the whole package overall.

"You could come by around closing time. And I get the impression nothing about you is average. How about it though? Some one on one time? I'll leave the light on for you."

Shaking her head at him, at this point Izzy’s grin was practically reaching from ear to ear thanks to the easy flow of back-and-forth conversation between the pair of them. So, when she felt his hand brush against hers and the hair stood up a little on her hand, it only confirmed what she already knew, she would have to hang out with him again.

“I think closing time sounds good to me” she nodded, before taking a sip from her drink, “I mean, it’s not every day an expert offers me a private lesson, so I would be a fool to decline now, wouldn’t I?”

They could stay in touch, for sure. That was probably as good an idea for Eric as it was for Izzy. He felt good, talking with her like this. It made things easier for a bit.

"Great. Come by tomorrow night maybe? We close at 9."

Chewing on her bottom lip for a moment, Izzy gave Eric an appreciative look up and down before eventually nodding her head. “Eight works for me” she agreed before she caught sight of her clock.

“Unfortunately, I am going to have to play Cinderella now and head off as I have work early in the morning….” She started before opening up her bag. Scribbling down her number of a piece of paper, she slid it across the bar towards him, before throwing the pen back in her bag.

“If plans change, or you get bored, feel free to message me. I’ll be nice to hear from you”

"Well, Cinderella, I hope you have a good night." Eric replied easily as he took the paper from her. Then he took his phone from his pocket, setting it aside for the moment until Izzy got up. "I look forward to it. I'll see you tomorrow night?"

Throwing her coat on, and hanging her bag from the shoulder, Izzy turned back to face Eric. “Thanks, Flyboy” she grinned at him, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. “And try and stay out of trouble until at least tomorrow night, I’m looking forward to our hang.”

Then, giving him one last look up and down, she turned on her heel and headed out of the door of the bar.
