What: an unexpected visit

Tao had not gotten a lot of sleep. Thankfully, he did not need a lot. He'd cleaned meticulously of course, then sat on the phone all night. His source did not like to have any suspicion on them that they even liked vampires let alone were indebted to one. So a late night phone call was pushing things. Unfortunately, he did not have a lot of time to placate her. After explaining the problem, and promising this was a final favor she had relented and headed out to the church in the morning. He had laid in bed, no not a coffin, and stared at the ceiling. Usually a good couple of hours in the room, even if it didn't last as long as he would like, were relaxing. He'd instead found he let his guard down more then he anticipated and the shifter had garnered more respect then he had previously expected to give. Worse yet, he wasn't all that sure the rule of keeping things in the room would stick, as they had finished out negotiations inside.

That was upsetting as well. He'd had no problem taking out tribute. He had purposefully given the new leader the information to see how he would deal with it. Seeing if he would reach for that small bit of power, or even more. It would be telling on his position as leader and give Tao some weak points to use. Still, he had planned on enjoying the negotiations. There was nothing like riling up a shifter. Even the idiot power hungry ones.

Deciding sleep wasn't coming he'd headed into work, checking over inventories, new information and new hires. The club was doing well, they had a steady stream of regulars as well as those coming for the thrill of seeing a vampire. He drew up the new treaty and even slipped in a clause regarding collars to see if it would be noticed. The phone call from his plant came early and she had information. Not that it was good, she promised to stay on it. He explained it wasn't necessary, but she felt obligated. If only to spare the pack and vampires more problems.

He accepted a glass of blood to drink, from a blood bank few knew he owned and sat back to rest. Riley should be calling soon so he could pass on the information. The phone call, Tao mused, would be short and to the point. The shifter did not seem to enjoy talking to him much. The thought made his mouth twitch and he almost chuckled to himself.

"You're an odd duck." Riley replied, dipping the tip of his tongue into the indent of Tao's bellybutton. He had never heard a vampire speak at length about his feeding philosophy before, but he was pretty sure that Tao was not expressing the typical thoughts of the average bloodsucker. "I didn't think you were the type to take advantage of the fang-bangers, but never feeding from a human?" He caught Tao's skin lightly between his teeth. "I couldn't mark you if I wanted to." He murmured, almost regretfully.

Tao gave a small smile. "Are there not rules that you have, that your pack has that you may not understand. You do not know the origins of, but they are the rules, the laws, and so you obey them. It's much the same." He'd come up with his own rules long ago, when he still had an overbrimming of emotions and thoughts still tying him to humanity. He groaned and pressed at the back of Riley's head a bit. "Feeding, marking, both are a permanent and private kind of connection. Few have ever bared my mark and I've bared even fewer. How many do you claim?" It wasn't a demand or even simple curiosity. Though he was very curious if it was only his mate if that.

"Claiming and marking are two different things in my pack." Riley said with a small shrug. "My mate is mine, I don't need to wound her to prove it." At the urging of Tao's hand, he slid his mouth back down the length of Tao's torso. He let out a low growl and adjusted himself so that he was straddling one of the vampire's legs, kneeling, his head bowed to lap small circles over Tao's skin. The top sheet slid over his back and it felt nice and cool, like Tao's skin. "Plenty of vampires feed without getting attached, you know." He continued, "I don't see why it should be so personal. It's just eating, isn't it?"

"Mmmm, well, different for us as well. Marking is more personal, and makes the claim personal, rather then simply political." He groaned and let his head fall back. He could feel him, laying against his thigh, warmth along the side of his body. "It is now, just, eating. Feeding was, made personal, so I keep to my rules. "Not teasing." Riley murmured, his eyes half-lidded, "Tasting." He continued licking and kissing at Tao's skin, just mulling over what the vampire had said. He reached and wrapped one arm around Tao's thigh, pulling that leg up and onto his broad shoulder. "Mm." He groaned, moving farther down the length of Tao's body. The feeling of Tao shuddering against his body was enough to send Riley over the edge and he let out a shout as he came. Once Riley had calmed down somewhat, felt his heartbeat slowing, his breath becoming less erratic. He removed his teeth from their vice-grip on Tao's neck and he pressed a gentle kiss to his skin. He rested his forehead against Tao's jaw, silent for a minute until he also realized what was happening with the body beneath him. His eyes opened and he pushed himself up on his elbows, propping himself above Tao. It was dark, under the sheet, but Riley could still see fairly well, and it gave the space between them a cool, dark feeling. "So you do breathe." He said softly, and pressed an affectionate kiss to Tao's lips, as if he was trying to capture that magical breath for himself.

He made a face, "Not that I make a habit of sleeping with humans." And even if he had, it would never have even remotely compared to with Tao.
