Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Riley and Tao
What: final plans
When: four days later
Where: Sanctuary

Tao had worked on getting the schedule for the next couple of weeks so that Riley's people could find out more about this Dubois. He had already started his own research on the man and had not left his sanctuary since. Only the people there and his second knew that he had not really disappeared. He ran the club for Tao in his absence and kept people from panicking.

He was still concerned over Marie's attitude but kept her out of things as much as possible for now. Feeding her information was all he thought of right now and Jeanne had kept her distance during their very short visit. The dizziness had passed, finally, the next day, but he had still felt weak. Smaller meals, and more of them had been William's suggestion and rather then argue it, he agreed and was reminded with a glass every two hours or so.

For now he had let himself go just a bit, a pair of jeans and an open shirt were all he wore while he padded around the house. Sitting in front of the computer, he had finally gotten the office cleaned and new hard wood floors rather then carpet, he ran a hand through his hair and went over the files of Dubois that he had gotten a hold of.

Tao was just slipping on a T as he came back in. "I can have them cleaned for you. I can always say you left them around after negotiations got, terse." He replied with a grin. "I rarely if ever eat solid food, but I thought I would escort you down to see what William is up to. I trust him, completely but he picks things up a bit too easily."

Riley nodded. "Alright, but no soap." He said firmly. If he came back in clothes cleaned with detergent, it would have been more suspicious than even coming back smelling of blood and sex. He pulled his hand away from Tao's back, "Sounds good to me." He reached out an arm and hooked their elbows together. He gave Tao's arm a tug and proceeded out of the bedroom, through the doors and down the stairs, following the scent the whole while. They came to a dining room that was more spacious than Riley would have thought, and when he saw what was on the table, his eyes widened.

"Don't tell me-" He said, taking his arm away from Tao's. He turned his head the to look at the vampire with a girl, "Your cook-human knows about Shifter appetites?" Without waiting for a response, he strode to the table, turned around himself once then took a seat, and began to tear into the generously sized portion of steak with bear-claws and wolf-teeth.

He rolled his eyes, "What your aversion is to cleaning with soap I'll never understand. All right, no soap. Very very hot water." He kept an eye out on the way down to see if Jeanette was up, she was still much more fragile than he liked. Stopping at the dining room he was less surprised, he honestly didn't think much on what food was prepared.

Tilting his head his lips quirked as Riley started eating. "William is, very educated. He came to me from another household that had a predilection to, pets, of all kinds. I'd be surprised honestly if he didn't know something at this point." He smiled lightly at the coffee carafe' that he knew didn't hold coffee and poured himself a glass before taking a seat. "He made enough for an army." He muttered looking at all the food.

Riley couldn't help the soft growl that escaped from his lips as he ate. The meat was perfect, just the way that shifters liked it; from an animal that had found before dying, and cooked just enough so that it was firm and yet still bled when he dug into it with his teeth. When he looked up at Tao, there was blood at the corners of his lips. He licked it away and grinned. "Really good." He gobbled up the last of the first twelve ounce steak and continued to another one. He sniffed at the air as he ate, "Drinking the stagnant stuff again, Tao?" He asked between bites. "I told you, if you drink mine you won't get as hungry as quickly."

Tao almost laughed, he wasn't disgusted so much as amused at how much Riley was enjoying the food. He'd have to thank William later. Glancing to his glass he shrugged. "Actually I'm not hungry, but I wouldn't want to offend when so much trouble was made to feed us this morning. And careful there, you don't want word out that you are feeding a vampire. It wouldn't end well for either of us."

Riley shrugged his broad shoulders and reached for another steak. He hadn't realized that the previous night had taken so much out of him up until the exact moment the meat had cross his lips, and now that his ferocious appetite had been aroused, he was going to eat until it was satisfied. He met Tao's eyes. "You wouldn't want anyone to know that you're holding shifter fire in your belly, either, vampire." He replied, the right side of his mouth twitching.

"No, I wouldn't. It means you and your pack mean something to me, which puts you all in danger and shows a weakness. One easily exploited to take over my territory." Setting down his untouched glass he pinched the bridge of his nose. "We didn't think, there are vampires that drink shifter blood but not, " Closing his eyes it was worse to explain then leave it alone. "They use them, there are packs that are not as independent as yours, they are in service to the Queen and used and punished at will. Even if I alluded to the situation being the same it would mean disaster for your pack. Tribute would seem like, a vacation."

"So we don't tell." Riley replied. "It's as simple as that." He parted his lips and bared his teeth in a yawn, rolling back his shoulders before he dived back into eating his third steak. "We can just keep our independence and you can keep your reputation for being very strange for a vampire." He shrugged again, "And if any of your underlings ever give you trouble, I'll tear out their throats and throw their heads into the bay." He licked his upper lip. "The problem with you vampires is that you're so old-world about everything. Having a Queen? That's so-" He made a face, "Human of you."

Tao opened his mouth to explain it was not nearly as simple as that then closed it. "Well, we would have a King, but she'd have killed him long ago. I, explained that every vampire lineage has a gift, some are more dangerous than others. Some include calling animals. A visiting Master could force you to shift and would for fun if they smelled one hint of preferential treatment. I'm not worried about 'underlings'. I doubt any outside of this house will have a clue."

Riley's nostrils flared, but other than that he showed no sign of being disturbed by this news. It was something that he would share with his clan's religious elders, a piece of information that would be useful in getting them to refrain from questioning the amount of time he had spent with Tao lately. Despite Riley's affection for this particular vampire, his kind and Tao's kind had been enemies far longer than both of them had existed. "So I'll just say it now." He continued after swallowing a bite of steak. "If some big bad vampire shows up, you can pretend I'm your pet, if that's what it takes to get them off of your back." He let out a soft growl, "I don't care, I went through tribute, I can pretend again."

Tao narrowed his eyes and his jaw ticked. "No. We can, say we dragged out treaty, we can say there are more problems with humans, but they don't deserve the truth and I won't have you, demeaning yourself. If I have visitors I will warn you in advance but you should have no need to interact with them. You may wish to keep your young ones away from the city though should it come up. They may not be smart enough to turn down the kinds of riddles and offers others offer them."

Riley was annoyed that Tao had so quickly shot down what he had said, but at the same time, how could he be angry at Tao for wanting to protect the integrity his fierce pride. "It was just an idea." Riley muttered, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. "Lucky for you, shifters don't have royalty like you. In this area, I'm the law." There were higher ranks within the spiritual leaders, Riley knew, but they rarely if ever came down from their high perches to grace alphas like him with their presence. He grinned. "And I've already taken care of you."

His jaw relaxed, and he sighed. "It was not a reprimand. Simply that, you are not the type of shifter to be a pet, if you were, we wouldn't be in this situation." He answered. Tao was the law in this area, and as long as he did nothing to give cause, then there was no reason at all for there to be an issue, but like packs trying to expand their territory, there were times there would be a push against his borders. He blinked, "Oh? And how have you 'taken care of' me?"

Riley let out a laugh. "Don't look so serious!" He exclaimed confidently, reaching for another plate. He bowed his head to take a bite and then glanced up at the vampire, "Now that you know what I can do with my mouth, there's no way you'll cause me any trouble. You've been neutralized."

Tao snorted, "Cocky shifter." He looked to the glass but truly wasn't hungry. "I had a thought to how to get Dubois taken care of. I'll need to make some calls this evening, but you would need to keep your people out of the way. Set it up as though he thought there were shifters in the area, but make sure that none of you are actually there, just in case. We can call in some wolves to make it a bit more, realistic."

Riley scoffed, "Another plan where I wait on the sidelines, huh?" He asked, unable to keep the resentful tone out of his voice. Was it all going to end up like this? With Tao plotting and telling Riley to keep out of things? "That's not too hard to do, and I can even take care of the wolves, if that would make things easier for you." There were a few wolf packs in the area that were loyal to the East Pack, or at least had a positive relationship with them.

Tao sighed, "No, you will not wait on the sidelines, but your pack would be better served being elsewhere. Since they'll come armed, I thought you wouldn't want to bring anyone that could be killed before the humans are found out by the police. Besides, I've learned telling you what to do doesn't seem to work, you can be very contrary."

"The only shifters that have been killed have been stupid, drunk pups." Riley replied, annoyed. "You keep underestimating my people. Don't you know that the other shifters my age, our warriors, could deal with these fucking humans and their guns just as well as whatever you have planned for them?"

"They could, and then they would simply feed the fear of the others and make martyrs of them. Which is why we can not simply kill them. We must discredit and expose them first. Unless you wish to start a war?" He shook his head, "It's not a matter of underestimating, it's a matter of taking care of the actual problem, not simply killing the humans that are causing problems right now only to allow new ones to take their place. If you have your pups there, they could get hurt, or killed. If you have your warriors what may happen is that the only thing caught by authorities is a group of shifters trying to kill humans. Which would only exacerbate the problem."

Riley didn't like it, but that did make sense. He let out a frustrated growl and tossed his head, curling a hand into a fist and striking it against his thigh. "Fuck, damnit." He grumbled. "Diplomacy shit? Then-" He pressed his lips together in a thin line. "Shifter diplomacy involves slashing throats. Maybe it is better if you take the lead if that's your plan. But, Tao-" He slapped the flat of his hand down on the table, "I want to be there, at least! There has to be something that I can do!"

Sitting forward he grabbed Riley's hand. "I never said you wouldn't be there. Believe me instinct says to kill, but there's a reason there is so much politics to the way we do things. Because that is how the humans do them. It gives us the ability to work on their level, even if we don't like it. The one thing you can do, is not get yourself killed."

Riley's eyes widened. So he did understand. The corners of his mouth twitched up into a self-confident smirk and he wrapped his fingers around Tao's, covering their clasped hands with his other palm. He leaned forward a little. "Come on, Tao." He said lightly. "I can control myself. Not with you, obviously, but if you don't want me to murder all of them the second they show up, I can listen to that, too." He raised the vampire's hands to his lips and pressed a gentle kiss to his skin. "I fought a bear bare-handed, Tao. I'm not going to get killed."

Tao looked a little less confident. "Hmm, well a bear doesn't plan and doesn't prepare specifically for shifters. I'll hopefully have more solid plans this evening. Unfortunately I have no choice but to sleep come noon, but can rise again by sundown. There are media and police that can be trusted and can help to expose them permanently shutting them down. After that, there will be stragglers, a few thinking they can still work on their own. Those we can kill"

"You and I must know different bears, then." Riley replied, his lips parting into a wide grin. He drew his hands away from Tao's and set them on the table. "Alright, then." He said firmly, because he very easily could have leaped across the table for Tao again, and he was making a very good effort not to do so. "You make your phone calls. And I'll be ready when you need me." He rose from the table. "I'll be alright, Tao, you don't have to worry about me. Just do me a favor and do a little worrying about yourself."

Tao did worry, he was cocky and even if he was right to be so, there was always someone, something, waiting for a moment, just one where you were off balance. He smirked, "Sure you got enough to eat?" He knew he'd have to at least finish a glass or it would look too suspicious so he'd try that in a bit before bed. He rose himself. "It takes a bit more to kill me than it does you, besides, I've been around a lot longer."
