Is it too soon to contemplate costumes for the coming round of Hallowe'en galas and parties? It seemed like every other person was dressed as Merlin or Morgan le Fay last year. I mean to be more creative.

The Prophet continues its race to the bottom, I see. Unsurprising, but disappointing.

I am currently trying to come up with themes for our Halloween events for the charity to avoid precisely such a problem! I am studying foreign wizarding traditions to see what I can best come up with.

Let me know if inspiration strikes! I think men have it easier, there are annoyingly more famous wizards in fiction and in history than witches.

Now that is certainly the truth. And no-one wants to attend as a Salem witch - the whole story is far too tragic.

I must admit, the differing cultural views of Halloween are fascinating. Given that our task is to raise awareness of the charity's goals, celebrating diversity could be an interesting way to go.

That sounds like the makings of a splendid event. Let me know if I can lend a hand in anyway. I will be certain to attend at the very least and not as Morgan Le Fay, Rowena Ravenclaw, or Helga Hufflepuff.

I was reading this morning about American traditions. Apparently, they tend not to dress in what we might consider traditional "magical" outfits. Sometimes they just dress in any outfit that would come under the fancy dress banner... people, animals, characters from books, whatever takes their fancy. Themes are rather rare. It's rather interesting.

I'm also researching Samhain rituals in branches of Wiccan magical belief. Some of the gowns and things the women wear would make a lovely idea for a more formal party.

She was certainly the most interesting of the five, but I have no intention of my head going anywhere.

As I recall, neither did Anne Boleyn.

Mary Boleyn, of course, if the Prophet is to be believed. Don't bother being coy - we both know there's nothing flattering about my history with the prince.

Benefitted? What an insane notion. I certainly do not benefit from dead Muggles or mothers-in-law.

You benefit from the attempts on his children's lives. You benefit from having no mother-in-law lording over you, telling you what to do - you're practically queen now, and there's no one in that position to challenge your ego. And isn't it convenient that there was something at the reception to distract from how utterly miserable the prince looked?

I can think of several. For instance, helping those who weren't as fortunate as you were, being born with a silver spoon up your arse. Or maybe taking a look at the world around you, the world you'll unfortunately be ruling some day, and getting to know your future subjects. All of them, not just the ones you deem worthy enough.

Thank you for the vote of confidence. I'm turning to my old History of Magic textbooks for inspiration. So far all I've discerned is that there is a long list of historical personages who wore black robes everyday and shunned whimsy of every kind. Admirable enough, but it does not lend itself to ready costumes.

What would that even entail? Would I need to acquire trousers of some kind? The ideal for a costume is that people recognize who you are trying to be.

Perhaps the theme could be anything but the traditional witch and wizards? The traditional is played out. We need something new. And you, I believe, are the right person to change things up a bit. No?

I love it too, so I think I'm right in feeling that it isn't too early to consider costume selections. Without proper planning we will simply have rooms of people in sheets with holes cut out for eyes.
