Is it too soon to contemplate costumes for the coming round of Hallowe'en galas and parties? It seemed like every other person was dressed as Merlin or Morgan le Fay last year. I mean to be more creative.

The Prophet continues its race to the bottom, I see. Unsurprising, but disappointing.

You think far worse of my morals and far better of my capacity for Machiavellian scheming than I deserve, I promise you. I'm hoping your mad notions spring from an admirable concern for your family and friends and not from the onset of crazed paranoia.

I happen to be on the board for the Society for Distressed Witches, I'll have you know. But perhaps, perhaps there are other steps I could take in this new role I find myself in. I haven't been in the position for a month, you know. A more generously minded person might perceive that.

See, that's the funny thing - when you say that, you're trying to pretend to be less scheming than you think you are. But in truth, you're in so far over your head that I'm stunned you're still breathing.

Don't worry - crazed paranoia runs in the Black branch of the family, not mine.

You're on the board? Why didn't you say so, you golden-hearted angel of mercy? Please. I've been on plenty of boards in my life. It's an excuse for you to waste time and feel good about yourself instead of doing anything useful. You want to make a difference and earn everyone's respect, then go out and do something. A more generously minded person would already be exploiting her new position to help others.
