Character Information

Name: Ryder

True Name: Allejandro Reyes
Gender: Male
Age: 23
Birthday: May 25th 1998
Greatest Ambition: To live in the moment and move on from the past.
Physical Description:
Ryder stands at a modest 5'10”. He weighs 155 lbs. He’s not skinny or fat by any means, most of his body being muscle from all the outdoor work he does. He has brown/green eyes and dark brown/black hair that he keeps a number of different ways depending on his mood. He has fairly tan skin, a combination of his heritage and the insane amount of time he spends in the sun. It would be rare to find him wearing anything other than jeans and a t-shirt, or button-down shirt and his tattered black boots.

Distinguishing Marks: A scar below his bottom lip from when he fell off a bucking horse at age ten.
Sexual Orientation: Straight
Single or taken: Taken by [info]_windchaser_
Best friend(s): His horses (mainly Rose, his buckskin mare)

Personality:
Ryder is a fun loving and optimistic guy. Despite everything he’s been through he’s managed to move on fairly well. He loves life and can be known to be a risk taker. His horses help keep him sane and he’s of the firm belief that humans have a lot to learn from animals. Ryder is friendly with everyone he meets but isn’t necessarily outgoing in the sense of wanting to meet people. He has the tendency to wear his heart on his sleeve and bout out things before thinking them over too well.

Personal History:
Roberto and Maria Reyes met in a rather unconventional though not unromantic way. Roberto, who was eight years older than Maria was, worked as a ranch hand for Maria’s parents Camillo and Rosa Hernandez. Roberto came to work for the Hernandez’ when he was eighteen and Maria ten. Maria was already progressing as a brilliant horse-woman thanks to her mother’s training. Her mother, Rose, was a well known trick-riding champion and she had every intention to pass that title to her daughter. The Hernandez family owned a large cattle/horse ranch outside of Mexico City and were a rather prominent family.

A year after Roberto had been working for Maria’s parents both of his parents were killed trying to cross the Arizona border. The news didn’t even reach Roberto until they’d been dead for a month or more. Apparently there’d been some kind of scuffle in the night between the Coyote helping them across and a border patrol officer. In the chaos both of his parents and the border patrol officer had been killed. Being the kind people that they were, the Hernandez family immediately offered the hardworking Roberto a place in their home.

Roberto became like a part of the family and Camillo, who had always wanted a son was quick to take him under his wing and impart all his ranching secrets to the young man.

Fifteen years passed and in that time both Maria and Roberto had grown up a great deal. Roberto had taken over most of the functions of the ranch as Camillo had started to suffer from the early stage of Parkinson’s Disease. In the years that had passed Maria left the ranch for the city when she’d turned 18. She went to college and got her degree in equine science before she returned home. It was her choice as to what she wanted to do with her life, and she chose to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Despite her father’s disabilities her mother was as tough and healthy as ever.

Life passed leisurely by the Hernandez family. Five years after Maria’s return to the ranch she fell in love with the older Roberto whom she’d more or less grown up with. Her parents were delighted, especially her father who knew that once he was gone Roberto would take good care of the ranch and his daughter. Maria
and Roberto were only married a year before Maria became pregnant with their first child. It was a boy and they decided to name him Allejandro after Roberto’s father who’d died trying to cross the border.

Allejandro became the familie’s pride and joy immediately. As he got older it was obvious that he’d inherited his mother’s horsemanship skills. They often joked that he’d been born on a horse, which probably would have been true had Maria not been bedridden the last few months of her pregnancy. As soon as Allejandro was old enough to ride on his own he was in the saddle. He spent most of his time in the barn. In his youth they’d even found him sleeping in the barn a few times at the feet of a big mare.

Camillo’s Parkinson’s disease got worse, but it was a heart attack that eventually claimed his life when Allejandro was 13. The death of his grandfather devastated the boy, but it was his grandmother and mother that he was closest to. His grandmother was in her early 60’s but still her old self and she could still trick-ride with the best of them though she’d long fell from the light of competition. Allejandro loved trick-riding but had to practice it in secret as his father believed it was a woman’s sport. He roped, worked cattle, and trained horses to please his father.

Allejandro loved his childhood. His family had a decent amount of money and he loved the ranch life. But when he was 16 tragedy struck. After Camillo had died he left behind a hefty amount of debt that no one knew about until some unseemly gentlemen came knocking on their doors with guns. Roberto made a deal with the men, a deal that is still a mystery to Allejandro. Three years after Roberto had made that deal with the men, he’d done something to make the men mad. His mother was in a horrible car accident while driving in the city and foul play was suspected. She survived the crash but ended up paralyzed from the waste down.

Roberto knew exactly who was responsible and he had had enough. Allejandro never really knew what went on behind the scenes but his grandmother told him that his dad made a deal with the government of Mexico and the United States. Somehow he was able to trade the names of those bad men for U.S. citizenship for them all. It was mere months after his mother’s accident that they all packed up and left the home that Allejandro loved so much.

They sold their ranch and livestock to the government and moved to the southeastern corner of Colorado to start their lives over again. His father decided to raise mostly horses and only a few head of cattle. Moving to Colorado was like moving to another planet for Allejandro. He could speak English, but he still felt like a total outsider. Everything was just different.

With his mother in a wheel chair and his grandmother suddenly falling ill when they reached Colorado Allejandro was numb. Everything he’d loved had been torn down and somehow reassembled with different and faulty instructions. He did the best he could to remain happy and threw himself into his work on the ranch. He spent hours with his mom at his grandmother’s bedside. He’d grown even more distant from his father, having come to blame him for all of their troubles.

The one light in all of the darkness was the nurse that the family hired to take care of his mother. Her name was Ellie Tranter. She was quickly absorbed into the family, and his father and the ranch hands came to consider her a daughter.

He completed high school but chose not to go to college in favor of working with the horses and taking care of the ranch. The day after he graduated high school his grandmother passed away. His mother stopped speaking because she was so depressed and his father grew even more distant from all of them. Allejandro would sit and read to his silent mother for hours or push her out to the barn and tell her all of the latest developments with the horses. He also spent lots of time with Ellie, helping her learn Spanish and teaching her how to ride a horse.

During Allejandro’s 20th year the Ans virus had gone airborne and started infecting and killing off everyone over the age of 25. His father fell ill before his mother, and Allejandro found him in the barn shortly after, hanging from the rafters, a rope tight around his neck. Allejandro didn’t bother calling anyone to help him with his father’s body. From what they were saying in the news and on TV there was no use, everything had gone to chaos. He buried his father himself. He didn’t tell his mother what had happened, she was still silent in her chair. It wasn’t long before looters arrived at the ranch to try and take things over. The ranch hands had either deserted or died long ago and it was now just Allejandro, Ellie and his crippled mother. Eventually Ellie had to make the painful decision to leave the ranch and seek out her own family. Ellie promised she would come back and Allejandro promised he would wait there for her.

At first Allejandro was able to keep the looters at bay but it wasn’t long before single looters turned into organized groups. Some of them were even sick with the virus, and those were the ones he killed with a vengeance. Foolishly, he believed that he could somehow protect his mother from their sickness. One night while he was standing guard on the porch he happened to doze off, only to be awoken by the screams of his mother from inside the house. It was the first sound he’d heard her make in two years. In horror he leapt from his seat and ran into the house. He ran up the stares and into the threshold of his mother’s room where he stopped dead in his tracks.

There were three men in her room, they couldn’t have been much older than him. One of them was on top of his mother and the other two were standing there laughing, guns at their sides. In a rage he went for the one top of his mother. The men easily overpowered him. One of them held him around his neck at gunpoint. Allejandro’s mother was now speaking rapidly to him in Spanish. She was telling him to leave, let them have her, to just go. He told her no, he’d stay and protect her. The men were angry because they couldn’t understand what the two of them were saying. The one on top of his mother ripped her shirt open and Allejandro turned his face away while spitting curses and struggling. The only free man then walked up to Allejandro and hit him square in the face with the butt of his rifle.

The next thing Allejandro woke up to was the sun shining and the tall Montana grass waving lazily above his face. His head was pounding and he squinted against the bright sunlight as he pushed himself to a sitting position. Tied to his wrist was the reigns of his horse who stood tacked and ready, grazing lazily beside him. He grabbed a stirrup and pulled himself onto his feet. He looked around, totally lost at first until he saw the wooden cross that marked the place where he’d buried his father. He was in a field at the edge of a vast mountain range not more than a mile from his family’s ranch.

It all came back to him in a sickening wave and after vomiting the limited contents of his stomach he climbed onto his black horse, Sparrow and spurred him on towards the ranch.
He arrived shortly, only to find his American home burned to the ground. He couldn’t believe that after all of that they’d left him alive, and with his horse at that. Was it cruelty or kindness they’d exercised towards him?

The first thing he did was look for his mother in the rubble. Unfortunately he found her body. He stayed there for hours, debating on whether or not to bury her charred remains but he simply couldn’t bring himself to do it, he couldn’t touch her. Eventually he got back on Sparrow and left. He didn’t know where he was going to go so he just let Sparrow lead the way. He had promised Ellie he would stay, but he couldn't bring himself to even try to stay there.

Sparrow eventually led him into Wyoming. He’d only stop riding long enough to scavenge for something to eat or to sleep, though he even slept in the saddle at times. He lost track of time and place and only lived to keep himself in the saddle, to follow Sparrow. Yet, tragedy was not done with Allejandro. As he neared the famous landmark of the Devil’s Tower in Wyoming he was attacked by a cunning group of scavenging riders. They knocked him off his horse, nearly trampling him to death as they rode off with his own horse in tow.

He couldn’t figure out why these horrible people kept leaving him alive. Couldn’t they just be kind enough to kill him? He laid there for hours before picking himself up and starting to walk. He didn’t know how long he had walked before he finally passed out from exhaustion and dehydration. Luckily he’d stumbled into the twin Feather’s territory and was found by Hawk Feather. The tribe took him in, fixed him up, and he’s been with them ever since. It took him awhile to recover from everything he’d been through but once he discovered they had a herd of horses he recovered quite well since he had something to devote himself to again.
