003; 23 September 1979;
I wish to follow Miss Sullivan's announcement to recommend the Brookstanton Memorial Library's "Moor and Fen, Valley and Glen: The Founders" exhibit. It is no secret to most people that I am a scholar of the history of Wizarding Britain, and so I have a natural disposition towards enjoying such events, however the exhibit is very well done and I will be taking my daughters to the exhibit in order that they may better appreciate the history of Hogwarts when they attend.

It is clear when one reads the paper that these are difficult times. Far from being unimportant or frivolous, a scholar of history knows that history can prove a navigational tool as we chart new and untested waters. Our history defines us as a people: It is who we are and why we are the way we are.

This exhibit is only one piece of our history, but for many of us whether we read Punnet's extraordinary detailed and well footnoted Hogwarts: A history or simply attended during our school, Hogwarts remains central to who we are. Friends made, connections forged, lessons learned, all of these pieces help to define our individual choices and decisions and thus define the the people as well as the individual. I encourage you to attend and to learn more about four individuals whose friendships and connections have so deeply impacted Wizarding Britain.

[Warded to Death Eaters]

Many of you have already visited this exhibit. My urging is even stronger for each of you whether history be your preference or not. You have each been chosen to serve the Dark Lord as we seek to preserve and restore our world.

We do not need to look far on the journals to see poor behaviour, foul language, frivolity, and the continual creep of Muggle influences into even those of Magical birth. There are individuals who would fail even a History of Magic OWL exam and yet can go on and on about Muggle lifestyles. These forces corrode the fabric of our society and leave us without the common bonds of tradition and family that are so essential to a peaceful society.

Each of you are of Magical birth and you have been chosen because the Dark Lord believes that you bring something essential to his plan. This includes training and battles, yes, but being a member of the Dark Lord's army carries beyond this.

It is your responsibility to the Dark Lord as well as to your friends, family, and colleagues to set an excellent example of what a witch or wizard should be like. Consider this in your private conversations, your evenings at pubs, your extracurricular activities, and your public behaviour upon the journals. Are you displaying a standard of behaviour that is exemplary?

We may lose sight in the battle, the injuries, the duels, that we are in the middle of a war against our culture and our history. As many Muggleborns enter our world, rather than fully adopting the rich heritage presented to them, they wish to cling to their own lesser heritage and share it with those of magical birth, distracting them from their own heritage. Thus our knowledge of culture becomes a weapon in this war. I want each of you to consider what you are doing in your daily life to defend against this onslaught of outside influences on our culture. What are you doing to improve others knowledge of Wizarding traditions and history? What are you doing to discourage the adoption of Muggle distractions?

I do not require an answer, but a well thought out one will demonstrate that you are aware of our Lord's ultimate goals and have considered these issues and such devotion will be noted.

Am I displaying a standard of exemplary behaviour? Undoubtedly not, but that's the knife I walk every day. It's easy for you lot to stay in your manor-houses talking about filth when I'm the one licking the scum off of their sinks. You don't know the half of it, how even the good ones are perverted by Muggle culture to the point where you're in the middle of it and it's impossible to remember if the song you're humming was written by a Ravenclaw alum or a Muggle junkie. It gets into your head, makes it seem worthy. And by then it's too late.

Which is why we show no mercy in the Dark Lord's name. This isn't a matter of Muggle records, or of family members. It's taking back what's ours. It's divorcing us from the corrupt. Only in the glint of green light will we be free of Muggle moral decay.

I hold no illusions about the fact that if I'm held to the light, they'll hate me for my lies so much they'll miss the point of the charade. Everyone would rather not know about the strings of the marionette. Everyone likes the show.

Now let's rip away the curtain.

You walk a very fine line, indeed and your efforts do not go unappreciated. You are on the front lines Barty, and even by your preferences, small words, an introduction of someone to a wizarding tune that is worthy their attention, you push that which is pure back in front of them.

There are many who are merely misled, and it is our duty and responsibility to help bring them back to the light. For the rest, then yes, as you say we must do as is necessary. But every drop of magical blood is precious to him, and it is precious to us. We must not spill it unless absolutely necessary.

[Barty]
You have had the most contact with these people. In your opinion, who are the ring leaders? The people who determine what others listen to, enjoy, etc.

Of course. Necessity is everything. Mustn't be mindless butchers.

[Patrice]

The heaviest hitters of the DMLE are the high-ranking Aurors and hitwizards. The Bones name carries more weight than most, and they're influential enough to be a problem. Blood traitors in lace. Gumboil molds the minds of young hitwizards, which is appalling. He's little better than street refuse. Podmore carries on like he's nothing but a buffoon but there's calculation there. When Moody speaks, people stop shuffling their paperwork. They listen. And for as much as Robards plays the dazed gentleman card, he's made of steel.

And my own father, of course, forgive him. I'll see to that rubbish if it's the last thing I do.

Bones, Gumboil, Podmore, Robards, and Moody, then. Good. Names to keep ones eye on. I think I'd like a weekly report from you on anything that is unusual or that you feel the Dark Lord should be aware of from your department. None of these men strike me as ones to be underestimated and knowledge is the most useful thing that we can gain from your position.

I do so love a good report. Consider it done.
