024; 30 November 1979.
[Warded Private]

I am doing my best to simply not think about the fact that we are at eight weeks, there is still a month, perhaps a bit more, before we can count on this, and even if it - it could be another girl. And as much as I love Tullia and Prisca, I do not know what I will do if it is another girl. Laelia is giving me concern enough right now and I am thankful that I have at least a half dozen years before I begin to consider for my daughters.

Rabastan Lestrange. Laelia did not seem overwhelmingly thrilled to the idea, but it would be a good match. It would even marry her up, a bit and Father would not be able to disapprove of such a match.

If not Rabastan? Anselm Mulciber would be a possibility I suppose. The Rosier boys - the eldest is the heir and serious enough to be a possibility. Regulus Black is young and I frankly harbour some concern about his maturity however strong the match might be. If I take into account Laelia's request for someone more mature...

I would not have chosen Lucia, but it has worked. When one is well-matched in society, the rest will work itself out.

And it does me no good to wish that Father was here to make the preparations. He is not and I must do what I believe he would have done in his stead.

[Warded to Mina]
Luncheon on Wednesday? Would you be free?

[Warded to Laelia]
It was good to see you Friday, Laelia. Give my greetings to mother, if you will.

[Warded to the Inner Circle]
In truth, I think women are at least equally a curse as they are a blessing.

It is always a delight to turn on the wireless and note a bit of history being shared. Mrs Vaisey, I do wish to thank you for that tidbit. And while I am certain you looked at it, I would encourage anyone who is further interested in our first witch Minister of Magic, to check out Skeenspell's biography from Brookstanton. It is an entertaining and enlightening read.

You must be reading my mind this evening, Patrice.

Erlack you have caught me, Caracatus, I was brushing up on my tea leaves earlier this afternoon.

I am ready to wash my hands of the entire lot of them. Granted it is an impossible wish, but I am certain I would have fewer headaches if I could do so.

Did you perhaps see the Grim as well? It might not bode well for my Tuesday evening.

At this moment, between my wife and daughter, I cannot help but agree. Arranging marriages is tiresome business.

I'll have to take another pass, but I believe the cup was Grim free. What happens Tuesday evening that has put you in such fear for your life? If you do not mind my inquiring?

This is what I am very desperately afraid of.

Dinner with Orion and Walburga Black. We are in talks of arranging a union between Celeste and Regulus.

The question is are we more terrified of Orion or Walburga?

I should say Walburga, but then, I haven't dined with either of them in some time.

It would seem to fall in line with our original thesis. I wish you luck, my friend. And if you survive, I'll send you a bottle of wine from my cellar - hopefully to toast a propserous union for your daughter.

Thank you, Mr Nott. I'm glad to have the support and approval of an historian such as you. I did find Skeenspell's biography very useful; it is an excellent recommendation.

I always enjoy a bit of history, so perhaps I am biased, but I did appreciate the segment a great deal.

As all of us have wives and daughters, no, it does not.

I have hopes for this ball Dulcinea is organising. I would prefer her to show a preference but she has been unmarried for too long. The decision cannot be delayed much longer.

Laelia seems completely unlikely to show a preference, but she is similar in age to Dulcinea if I recall correctly. I have mentioned to her that she might pay attention to her dance card at the ball. Perhaps I will get something from her in the New Year.

& apparently there was some incident among the women in the journals that had Lucia in an uproar. They give me a headache.

I am at a loss to explain Duclinea's lack of interest since she has never spoken against marriage, in fact she has been quite eager. I suppose I - no, we - must start considering the merits of the various young men of their age.

I had not heard of it. Honoria and Dulcinea must have missed it. I suspect that is a good thing. I would not fret too much. Women are prone to making a fuss over the oddest things.

Believe me, I have been considering such on and off for the past year. I suppose in some ways the mentorship program is an interesting way to view them in a more personal context.

That is true. And obviously I only have two of the four as Lucius is already married.

Has Anselm shown any interest in a young woman or is he as uninterested in the prospect of marriage as your daughter?

Not for the first time I find myself regretting the unfortunate circumstances of Severus' bloodline. Had he been a pureblood I might have found him acceptable. He is intelligent, skilled and loyal. Not exactly personable but that is a flaw that can be corrected. But it is not to be however. It will be several generations before his bloodline is returned to something approaching acceptable.

Not as yet. It is frustrating but as I married late I am prepared to give him a little more time.

You are the mentor for Rabastan Lestrange, are you not? What is your opinion of that young man.

He seems dedicated, which is certainly to be commendable, but you are correct that with his parentage, he cannot even be considered. Perhaps he can find a halfblood young woman of similar values to begin that process. I have no doubt he would raise his children properly.

If I had a son I would no doubt feel the same - after all I was nearly thirty so I could hardly speak too rashly.

Dedicated and reasonably proficient. His only flaw is perhaps a touch of arrogance, but that is likely a product of his family name and standing and time will temper it I should imagine.

I believe he would. Now there is a thought that I shall keep in mind. I would like to see Severus succeed and an appropriate wife could only help with that.

Hopefully his sister's marriage will remind him of his own duties to the family.

Thank you. Obviously I am taking him into consideration in regards to Dulcinea. I will have to speak to Caracatus but I wish to speak to Dulcinea first. I do not want her to be unhappy, just married.

I suppose in that young man's case mentoring might need to branch into a few additional areas outside of his skills for the Dark Lord. I doubt he has had much guidance from home.

He is around Laelia's age, is he not? Still young for a young man Although if Regulus but a reminder never hurts.

I had assumed as much. I would not hesitate to recommend him, should Dulcinea be so inclined. Unhappiness is never a preferred outcome of a union.

Thank you for inviting me over dear brother. It was good to see you, the children and Lucia as well.

Dearest brother, I believe I owe you an apology. I know I've been sour when it comes to our discussion about my future. I admit, I have been trying to put it off as much as possible but I feel now that it's only causing stress, not only in our relationship but for you personally.

I'm afraid that I have been stubborn about it lately, however I do not wish to be such a pain in this process. Since I have mentioned that I would like some say in this part, I know I should be doing my best to help this process in the best way that I can.

I am open for your suggestions if you have any.

Your apology is accepted, Laelia. I confess I find myself at a bit of a loss. I do not wish to upset you or to frustrate you, but you are at an age that it is expected that you should marry. To be honest, with Father no longer living, it is perhaps even more important that you are able to begin life with your own home and family.

You said you were attending the Mulciber's ball, and I am certain that your dance card will be full and you will have every opportunity to speak with the young men and get a feel for which ones you enjoy conversation with. Many of these young men are also on the journal network - find the opportunity to speak with them and determine which you enjoy conversing with the most. That, for the moment, is my suggestion. We can speak afterwards, and if you have a preference, perhaps we can discuss such then.

You mentioned you would like someone more mature, and Rabastan Lestrange comes to mind as a possibility although after the Masquerade, you may have a better idea if you are interested, additionally, Tristan Rosier might be an option. There are certainly other young men who are possibilities, and if you have a preference I will consider it. But I want to ensure that you are able to have a home used to the one that you are used to having and some of the young men simply cannot provide in the manner you are used to living

Does that seem reasonable?

I know that was not your intention and I do apologize for being so sour about it. I'm afraid my stubborn nature is sometimes hard to control and I know it is not a good excuse for my behavior. I admit a part of this is the nerves, I know you have faith in me as a wife and mother but I must confess, and since I feel like I have no one else to confess this to, I am a little terrified of the idea. I should have been honest with you and instead I came off as ungrateful and for that again, I apologize.

I completely agree, I think this ball will be a wonderful time to meet and get to know the young men of our society. I promise you I am more open to the idea of it and I am looking forward to it. I will do my best to keep an open mind and perhaps I will be lucky enough to find someone I get along with well enough that the idea will seem more favorable.

To be honest, while Rabastan is a wonderful man and I'm sure he will make any woman happy. I don't think he is the right man for me brother. I felt awkward and hesitant when we spoke.

As for Tristan, I have not had a lot of interaction with him, but the few times we have spoken, he seems like an agreeable man. If he is to attend Mulciber's ball, I will be sure to speak with him and get back to you.

Laelia, you are my beautiful younger sister. How could you be anything but an excellent wife and mother? I have every confidence, and while I know that may not ease your own fears, know that I do believe in you and there is not a young man in our circle that I would feel uncomfortable presenting you to.

You had not seemed overly enthused, and for the moment at least I will not push it. If you change your mind, you should let me know, Laelia, for the match would be an excellent one for our family, and frankly, it would not be a bad one for theirs either.

Regulus, Anselm, and Evan also come to mind, although all of them are a bit younger and perhaps do not have the maturity that you would wish exhibited.
