Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Summons
Who:  The new pack leader/ vampire sheriff
What:  A called meeting
Where:  neutral territory

Tao made it a point to know what was going on in his territory, so news of a new alpha in the local pack had made it to his office before it finished making it's rounds through the pack.  He'd expected to be contacted at some point.  Though the wolves and vampires were not allies or friends, they shared an uneasy existence among the mortals of the world.  All knew of vampires now, and few were surprised to know there were shifters as well.  So a kind of uneasy truce was made.  Of course, this was with the last alpha, and with new leadership, came new negotiations.  What he hadn't expected, was a summons.  A request yes, formal, in his office, that he could understand.  A summons, was a bit, brave, of the new leader.  However, there was more going on in their world then the usual, and Tao had been busy forming a plan of action with his lieutenants on ways to keep their people safe and possibly trace the problems.  Disappearances of vampires.  It happened from time to time, one or two. They might choose to greet the sun, move out of territories to another more, amicable, leader.  A few, very few as of late, were killed by rivals, authorities, or humans.  This, was not a few.  Whoever was doing this was organized, and careful, they never struck groups, they were after the younger and easily taken, no one with ties to the group or family.  Loners for the most part, so it had taken some time to realize it was patterned.  From the whispers they had heard, it was not only vampires going missing.

Which was why Tao came.  Typically he'd send a strong message of what happens when you summon a vampire like a servant.  He instead, gave the benefit of the doubt that it had something to do with a mutual problem as well as treaty negotiations.  This new alpha wasn't exceptionally trusting as he was asked to come alone, and to a place that might be considered neutral territory.  Which was hard to find, considering most of the county was under his own jurisdiction and he still had no clear boundaries on the pack's territory.  So he had to trust the alpha would show alone, and that the area was truly neutral, or at least safe for the time being.  Quite a bit of trust, he thought to himself with a smirk.  He'd obeyed, if you could call it that, and come alone.  His car almost invisible in the night, with there being no city lights or street lights to mark the area.  Once his headlights were out, he could very easily be hidden, from human senses at any rate.

Stepping out nearly an hour early, he'd dressed professionally, as usual.  Black slacks, a black silk shirt, button down.  He'd stripped the jacket, the chill in the air never penetrated his senses, and rolled his sleeves half way up his arms.  His hair, brushing his shoulders now, was pulled back and tied at the nape of his neck.  Sighing, he leaned against the car and gave a slow sweep to his surroundings.  He didn't need to breathe and so after the sigh, more habit then anything, he was still.  Listening and watching, for heartbeats, movements, and making sure there were not already a contingent of shifters laying in wait.

He heard him before he saw him. He'd even known he had come in wolf form. His nose wrinkling slightly at the sound of heavy breathing, panting, and him doing who knows what in the brush. He didn't want to think on it. While some shifters seemed capable of still behaving like civilized beings, some seemed to sink into the beast and unfortunately, those were typically the stronger ones. He would be surprised to hear anything other then grunts and yips in the conversation to come.

Allowing a few moments for him to, gods he hoped, shift back to human, Tao pushed off of the car and walked to stand a few feet in front of the hood. He didn't bother to disguise his appraising look as he took the man in. Under other circumstances, he might be impressed. For a shifter he didn't even smell. Well, at least not the wet dog smell, that rolling around in things you really shouldn't smell. He smelled only of forest, and dirt, but clean dirt. Yes, he knew the difference between clean dirt and dead, musty dirt. Even if he hadn't had to sleep in it for longer then the shifter, man, in front of him had been alive.

He didn't have to wait long for him to speak, and when he did, Tao's eyes darkened and he raised a brow. Vampire? Someone hadn't learned etiquette. Not that he was surprised. He was built and even his hands showed use, giving him the distinct impression that even were he not part of the pack, his human life led him to be a man capable and enjoying the work with his hands. What did they call them? Earthy men? Of the Earth? Ah well, not important.

He shook his head but instead of offering his hand, since they were seemingly going formal, at least by animal standards, he put his hands in his pockets. "I am quite aware of who you are, and your recent rise to power. I would say congratulations are in order, but truthfully, I liked Dean. He was, malleable." He smiled. "Your elders do you a disservice, this is not how you request a meeting. Also, I have a name, pup."

Respect was a big thing, in either of their circles. He wasn't about to allow things to begin with that kind of greeting. If this ended up being nothing more then his attempt at showing his new power and seeing if Tao would bend, he was wasting his time.

"Malleable enough to have his neck tore open." Riley replied quickly, his eyes narrowing. "And I didn't need fangs to do it." He could still remember the fight. The scratching and the clawing, their beaten, bruised and bloody bodies clashing with all their might. The bear that wanted to bash in his brains, the bird that wanted to pluck out his eyes, and the wolf that desired only to consume his heart, and Riley not allowed, not able to shift because of the foul brew that he had been required by their holy man to drink before his challenged commenced. "I'm no pup." He added, and fought the urge to growl. Just speaking a few words to the vampire was already testing the limits of his patience. Everything in him was urging him to leap forward, to attack, but he had to remember that there was no pack here for him to lead. He had come alone like he'd promised. And as much as his kind didn't like to admit it, a single vampire was damn difficult to kill one-on-one when they were old as stone like this bastard.

And that smile was damn creepy.

"I know you have a name." Riley continued, "But we don't say the name of Old Ones in my pack, even if they are walking among the living. But if you're determined to hear me say it, I know it." He paused a moment, his skin bristling with heat. "Tao." He said finally. "I hear we have similar headaches." He reached into his back pocket and pulled out a small cloth bag and loosened the drawstring. He upended its contents into his hand and held out the pieces of a single shattered vampire fang. "Found this in the thick forest two week ago, stuck so deep into a tree we had to cut it down to get at it. The air smelled like silver, too. Like clean, cut wood and fear, too." His eyebrows raised, "Then I did some digging and I found out you're missing more than a couple of your kind. And I know that you know that I been missing people two."

Riley bared his teeth and dug his heel into the dirt. "I don't like your kind. Hell, I hate your cold-ass guts. But I know Dean didn't give you too much trouble and I know I haven't got any shit with you. And since I don't feel like having my fuckin' tail chewed off by my elders, I'm meetin' with you. What else do you know?"

His lips twitched, threatening a true smile. Dean had been strong, physically of course, what alpha wasn't? His personality? Well, it left a lot to be desired. He was a power monger and that was all. He cared very little for his own people and when he had the bargaining power to give them more of a foothold in the county, he hadn't used it. He'd given it up for what he saw as personal power. In short, he was an idiot. Tao was only sorry to see him go as he was useful. A new leader meant new deals and possibly loss of control over the shifters as a whole.

He shrugged a single shoulder. "Tao is what I am known as, it is not my name. Names have power, little wolf." Most people didn't realize how much. He had been Tao for more then a century now and only two others that he knew of, knew his real name, and they wisely never used it. It amused him that the new alpha had such a problem saying it. His face went hard and eyes sparked dark light. He could see more then well enough yet he still stepped forward to look into Riley's hand. A low growl rumbled in his chest, and he hissed out a breath. This was the first actual evidence found of deaths. They were of course suspected but, vampires don't leave a lot behind when killed, so solid evidence of murder was hard to come by.

"How many are you missing and have any bodies been found?" He asked simply, his words bitten off. Formalities were important to vampires, he'd learned to live by them like they were second nature. You didn't last long in the politics of the vampire world otherwise. You learned to put on the exterior needed and whatever personal feelings you had that might be used against you, were buried so deep that even you might forget you had them. He could drop the formalities and get away with it if it meant saving his county from a raging serial killer.

His upper lip twisted into a smirk. "So noted, little wolf. Just remember, our prey may be different, but at least we do not delude ourselves into thinking we are predators only part of the time." He wasn't about to share information until he got some in return. Then he would decide if he needed to work with the shifters, or if they warranted his help.

Riley hated talking about ancient things, they reminded him of all that wolf blood that was boiling inside him. He knew he had a name written in old letters on his back that he knew how to pronounce but could never say until he was old and weak and ready to pass. If he had lived long enough to be an old warrior, he could say that name and release himself to the old fire and he wouldn't die in shame by sickness or 'accident.' Ancient things like true names were deep, dark things, things he didn't have time to deal with right now. Better to let the Elders spin the smoke while he took care of business, this business.

He didn't want to pace, that would show the weak, animal side of him, but he did need to, that was just his nature. He hated the expression on that vampire's face. Riley put the pieces of the vampire back into the bag and then dropped his large hand to his side. "Lost about a dozen for sure." He said finally, the frustration of losing his pack members, his people, bubbling beneath his breath. "Four more have gone missing. Always individuals, never more than two at a time." His lower lip twitched. "We don't find bodies, they're just gone." Everyone in the pack knew when someone in the family died, but he wasn't about to tell the fanger that.

He paused, the number higher then he had known, but he'd almost expected that. Neither was going to go running to the police or each other over every little issue. It showed weakness to need outside help for your own people. This however, showed that they had a common enemy. It had been a long time since Tao had thought of humans as a whole or a group, as enemy. Oh there were a few but that was the same with any race so was not much of an issue.

While the numbers were obviously not high enough to warrant investigation from outside their respective groups, it was enough to be a priority. As such, decisions had to be made, and whether he liked it or not, he most likely needed to work with the shifters to solve it. Quickly. He gave a slight nod. "Whoever it is, they might have been culling the groups of the weak and unnecessary, but I can think of no one who would feel the need in both the shifter community and the vampire one. So they are looking for annihilation, and too weak or cowardly themselves to go for the head. A mistake."

He turned on his heel and pulled his keys from his pocked. "Everything I have gathered is in my private office. Get in." Decision made, he would deal with the consequences. He rarely doubted his instincts, they had kept him alive. He didn't know much about this new alpha yet, but he knew two things for sure. He was not to be as easily manipulated, and he did what he felt necessary to protect his own. Unfortunately, he respected both, even if they were not to his benefit.

"I said I wanted to talk with you here, if you wanted me to look at something, you should have brought it, Tao." Riley snarled. He wasn't stupid, and he wasn't getting in a damn vampire car and being driven into deep vampire territory. "It's not my fault you didn't bring a car big enough to hold a damn thing." With his broad frame and his height, he seriously doubted that a ride in the vampire car would be even remotely comfortable. He preferred his truck, he'd kicked the doors off of it and it was nice and airy and it could get him any place he couldn't run to himself. "And you don't order me." He added, his jaw jutting out.

He stopped at the car door, hand on the handle, and closed his eyes for a moment. This wolf was getting to already be more trouble then he was worth. When he opened his eyes again he turned to look at Riley. "You, neglected to inform me of the purpose of this meeting. A meeting, I might remind you, that I was summoned to like some errant child."

He opened the door and stood next to it. Hand tight on the top as he reigned in his own temper. Typically he was careful not to rise to the bait given him, to show temper was to show a weakness and he refused to show one to anyone, let alone a young mongrel that had lucked into a position of power.

"Now, seeing as you are new to your position and are, so far, unaware of what that position entails, I'll see to forgiving your adolescent posturing. In case you had forgotten, you have yet to even address the very tentative treaty your people have with us regarding your territory. Now, I, in good faith came out to the middle of nowhere to meet with an untested, and unproven pup and have found a common enemy. If you wish for assistance, you will extend the same courtesy and get. in. My private office is not in the city and away from the heart of our territory. I am not stupid enough to be inviting you into our lair, little wolf."

"I proved myself to my people; I have the scars and the marks from it and that's good enough for the treaty we've had since the twenties." Riley knew that wasn't very much time for a vampire, but he was sure as shit not going to adjust his internal perception of time for Tao. "We haven't had any battles, we haven't had any major conflicts in years. There's no reason any lines should need to be redrawn, unless you're itching to start shit while your kind and my folks are gettin' picked off." His eyes flicked to the car door under the vampire's hand and then back up to Tao's face. "I'm not interested in the kind of horseshit negotiating that you people like to tie mine up in. That's not happenin', not until this business is done.

"If your office is outside your territory, in a place where there's trees, then I'll go." Riley continued, "But I'm not going in your damn car." He pressed his lips together in a thin line. "I'll run alongside. I'm quick as any metal thing."

His jaw worked, this one wasn't giving an inch, unless he absolutely needed to. In any other time or place, that would pose an interesting challenge. Over time those had become few and far between. "Treaties are renegotiated with every new leader. You really are ill informed. The treaty has lasted that long because that is when I took over this territory." Though he had been making the majority of the decisions elsewhere long before. He had simply needed to play the game, the politics, long enough to be given a larger territory on his own.

He hadn't actually said it was outside of his territory, only that it wasn't in the center of it. While he did spend time in the lair that was provided for those visiting or higher up in status, he preferred his privacy too. Things the wolf need not know yet. With a small smile he nodded to him. "That isn't always something to brag about, little wolf. Very well, follow." He slid behind the wheel and started the engine, but didn't put on lights. No need to blind the super sensitive pup.

Hitting the cell he called ahead to clear the wolf and most of the staff, even if there was only a few on this time of night anyway. He pulled the wheel around and headed out, lights hitting the road after a few moments.

Riley nodded tersely and pulled the bag with the vampire fang from his pocket and clamped it in between his teeth. Once the vampire was away in the car and Tao had begun to drive, Riley raised his head to the open air and howled, his lips curled back. His teeth were bared and they began to sharpen as he began to shift into the great golden wolf again. He dropped the bag onto the ground and tore the clothes off of his body, ripping them to shreds, and then picked up the fang bag again. He snorted, damn it, why had he just done that? He'd had self control while talking to the vampire, or he thought - but he had let his blood boil for a few seconds and now he didn't have any damn clothes.

The car was speeding away and there wasn't any time to grab new garments. Riley growled and shook his head, and then took off after the trail of the smell of gasoline. His paws pressed into the road as he sprinted down. His spine was tingling as he ran. Finally he caught up to the car, the wind whipping around him. He was determined, and so he squinted his big brown eyes and surged ahead until he was running beside a car door. He would and could stay beside the car for the duration of the trip.

The sound of the howl felt as though it went through the car and into his nerves. He shivered, then clamped his teeth down in frustration. He almost gunned the motor then but decided it would only start yet another little power struggle they didn't need. He moved towards the city but turned off before the lights from it could penetrate the sky.

It was a large house, but not opulent, and gated. The gate opening before he arrived and staying open until he'd get to the door just in case. Pulling the car to the front he quickly parked and opened the door stepping out. Waiting at the bottom of the steps for Riley. "I am not allowing animals inside, so I suggest you change. Some of the staff are allergic to, dog." He added.

The house was unnecessarily large, in Riley's opinion. But then, he thought an awful lot of houses were too big. Why would anyone ever want to put walls around that much space, was his question. All he needed was a roof over his head so he didn't get wet in the rain, and sometimes he didn't even mind that - though the womenfolk and the cubs were mighty particular about it. He passed through the gates and slowed to a gallop and then a trot outside the door. He clawed the earth as Tao spoke and looked up to him with baleful eyes. Inside, he debated whether or not he ought to surge past the vampire - but then, that would be awful immature.

Riley raised his eyes to the evening sky and shifted. He changed slower than he could, taking care so that the vampire wouldn't note how quickly he could do it. The last thing to change was his teeth, his sharp canines morphing into a perfectly pleasant, very humanesque smile. That was how one could tell a shifter from a regular old wood dwelling redneck freak. Riley's family were animals - sometimes - but they had proper teeth.

When his change was over, he stood completely bare in front of the vampire, unashamed of his body. Proud, in fact, of the scars and the ink that marked his skin. He joined Tao next to the steps, "Someone as old as you ought to know the difference between a dog and a wolf."

To the human eye, he stood very still. Simply watching with an impassive face as the great golden wolf shifted. The shifter in question was probably too busy with his change to notice the subtle difference in Tao's stance. Not all vampires could feel the wash of power during a shift, but Tao did. It hit hm like a warm electric storm and his shoulders tensed slightly.

In all actuality, the wolf was anything but little. Larger, even, then a real wolf, but no so much larger as to be noticed by those with no real experience. The color of his coat was richer as well, and of course the eyes, unnervingly intelligent for a beast of field. All things most humans and many of the supernatural world would dismiss. Tao knew it was a mistake to underestimate this one, yet he would still poke, prod. See where that line was. Rile hm and see what caused him to slip.

As he stood, human again, Tao kept his eyes on his face, peripheral vision was a brilliant thing, especially to one accustomed to seeing more then the average man. "The mess you make and the, smell, is close enough." He turned and headed up the steps to the door opening it he stepped through and glanced to the woman standing there.

A petite thing, dark hair, dark eyes and a ruddy complexion. He smiled inwardly to see the reaction of both of them to the naked man following. "Jeanne, please get something for our guest to wear. You would think someone in a position of authority would remember clothes, but what can you expect from someone that both fights and flaunts their nature."

It was bad form to enter a dwelling without permission and he didn't remind the alpha of this. It would be a penalty he could exploit later if he forgot, even if personally it didn't bother him.

Riley shook the smell of gasoline out of his hair as he followed the vampire into the house. He noted the presence of the woman before the door, and his nostrils flared instinctively. Smelled like moving blood and the scars of glamor on the brain. He ignored Tao's barb and instead accepted the black robe that was offered to him a few minutes later. It was silk, probably more expensive than his truck, and it felt funny on his skin, but it probably wasn't a good idea to refuse it, he had already made his point with his nude form. He knew that by the expression on the woman's face.

He pulled the belt of the robe around his middle and tied it at his waist, the hair on his arms and chest scratching against the smooth fabric. "Show me what you want to show me and let's get done with it." He said, and reached into his mouth to pull the bag with the vampire fang from against his gums. He slipped it into a pocket in the robe and looked at Tao expectantly.

Smiling inwardly he finally had at least one solid advantage to hold over him later. Later of course, being after they found the person or persons responsible for attacking their people. Shrugging out of his coat he handed it to Jeanne, and then rolled the sleeves of his shirt up. "Anxious, however did you become a leader with the patience of a newly weaned pup?"

Small insults, but he had already noticed certain words had an effect. Of course he understood the hierarchy of the pack rather well. Not that the last alpha had been particularly useful in that respect, just that keeping your ears open and letting others talk, especially in a club that welcomed the 'supes' as they called themselves, taught you quite a bit. Pup, was insulting by the time most boys reached teen.

With a small wave of fingers over his shoulder he headed back behind the stairs to a small office. It was surprisingly light, walls painted a soft blue that faded up to a dark blue ceiling, furniture comfortable but in cream colors, not black or leather. His desk was a large home office L shaped desk in light wood, only the computer and monitor on it were black. Grabbing a chair in front of the desk he carried it with him and set it next to his own office chair. "We have been tracking last known whereabouts, of the victims we know about. I've begun to enforce a patrol of trusted members of the cadre for safety, concentrating on the areas with sparse population. Targets seem to be alone, or away from the club or lair. By all information, they have no idea where the lair is, but most know the general vicinity as it's a feeding ground for 'groupies' that hope to be used as cattle." He explained as he sat and logged in, bringing up the city map he'd been using to schedule patrols.

Of course Riley was anxious, not being in the city didn't mean that he liked being with a vampire in a vampire house. He didn't like it, but he followed along after Tao through the house and to his office. He was surprised by the decor of the office, it was almost pretty like a good sunday dress. When Tao pulled up a chair for him, he was reluctant to sit, but did so - only after pacing a little in place to keep himself from turning in a circle.

Riley frowned at the computer screen, squinting at the map. "Members of the pack don't usually go off alone, but all the times our people have disappeared, it's been when no one else can place where they were." Not with their eyes, at least. But who would use their pack Sense to keep track of the weakest members of the family? There was no point in that. He raised a hand and pointed at the map, at a spot about a mile from the vampire club. "Some of our youngest, dumbest little fuckers like that club you run. At least three disappeared within a three mile radius of this area." He turned his head to aim a hard look in Tao's direction. "That's why we thought you fangers were the ones who done it at first, but then-" He moved his finger to point to another spot, "Then we lost two in this area, and this is sacred ground; vamps haven't walked it in over a century." His eyebrows furrowed, "But we do let humans walk it, on account of we aren't so eager to let them know we exist as you lot are."

Elbow on the desk, he held his chin in thought. They hadn't lost any near the club, and for good reason. "The club is sanctuary. No fighting or feeding allowed. We only escort out those that break the rules, or come looking for or to be prey. We didn't see the need to escort others and have had no problems in the area. Of course, we never thought the pack needed us to escort them safely home." He added with a bite. More he was annoyed that he'd now have to move up security outside as well as in. The idea that he thought he'd break treaty he himself worked hard to procure over some adolescent shifters with more balls then brains irked him, but he worked hard not to show it.

Their so called sacred ground wasn't impossible for a vampire to traverse, just forbidden. The younger ones seemed to believe they were curtailed by religion, older vampires new that the cross, and religious grounds were only as strong as your own belief in it. However, few in the area knew that, and they knew to steer clear, as part of the treaty more then anything. That and, lack of interest. "So, if it is the same group attacking both, it would be human, or shifter. It would have to be a group, even a single human with a plan and knowledge couldn't pull off this many disappearances and so smoothly. The police have yet to notice, or if they have it s not a priority.

He shrugged and smiled, "Perhaps if you had thought to put some of your own people in media that wouldn't be the case. It took generations to build up the romantic vampire image in book and film. Shifters, are still seen as more animal then man and so humans are wary."

"Our kind has no desire to be romanticized." Riley replied scornfully. "Your lot has always been kind of fruity, and it's kinda funny when they start making weres look like pretty boys. I know that's pissing off the ugly-ass mongrels up north." He grinned briefly, and then his expression went stone-cold serious again, "We keep to ourselves, is all. It used to be easier before electronics and computers and such." There were a few oddball shifters who kept up with technology, and their jobs were to keep track of the little knowlege of shifters that was floating around the internet - purging it when a human came a little too close.

"It's not a shifter doing this." He added firmly, "Can't be. My pack doesn't go into the city, that's dead land. And we keep track of all the packless shifters that come into the area. But there's not enough of them to take down a vampire. Besides, packless don't band together unless they want to get themselves killed." He bared his teeth. "We're called the East Pack for a reason. Hartwick's great-granddaddy ran out or absorbed all the others years ago, my granddaddy kept the usurpers out, and Hartwick's daddy made sure the West Pack stays clear of our lands." He growled softly. "It's gotta be humans. Stupid humans, but organized ones. I knew we shoulda buried that silver mine near the foothills."

"Human misconceptions have their use. You work too hard to keep your information secret, it makes them more, curious. They'll work harder to find what you don't want them to. Better to serve them small bits of unusable information, even misinformation, to sate the curiosity. It keeps them from the information we don't want them to have."

He hadn't honestly thought it to be a shifter, and as soon as he learned they were also disappearing he'd ruled out a vampire as well. Before, it was possible that a coup was being set up and he just wasn't aware. Improbable, but possible. He sighed and leaned back, folding his arms over his chest. "Have you heard of the new church? The, Golden Light or some such thing. Preaching the end of days, with the coming out of the supernatural as a sign of darkness? They have been cropping up all over the country, so far, nothing too problematic, some protesters and the like. Politicians hoping for a few followers." A silver mine was a problem, for both of them. He narrowed his eyes, "Who owns the mine?" If it was in the hands of anyone they could get control over, guarding it would just take a few more resources.

"Who knows?" Riley asked with a shrug of his broad shoulders. "It's government run, far as I know, and that means that the deed's probably wrapped up in more red tape and bureaucratic bullshit than you glamor could cut through, even with your folks from the TV." His upper lip curled, "Don't need to own a place to burn it down or fill it up with boulders, weld up the front door and forget about it." As far as Riley was concerned, that could have been the end of it, except that Dean Hartwick had refused - just to spite him, he was sure. That bastard. He could still taste his blood on his teeth, and that felt damn good.

Riley sat back in his chair. "The place in this area is called the House of His Holy Light. Holy Light for sure." He said with obvious disgust. "There was some kind of petition rollin' around before they built the place to stop them from doin' it, but that was before your folks got the right to vote." His nose twitched, "Pretty sure they get government funding, buncha fuckin' wackos, what they are. Church people are usually decent folks, but these ain't church people, and that ain't a church. Christ as light is a damn metaphor that those dumb fucks don't understand."

"We don't destroy property or livelihoods if we can help it. There are always other ways. Especially if the mine is not under use at the time. I'll have someone look into it." He shook his head, one problem at a time. Tao had his own moral code, it wasn't exactly what one would call human or humane, but it wasn't as ruthless as most vampires either. He was just really good and not appearing weak with it, and so he was cut some slack from the royal court. Which he steered clear of as much as possible. Only attending and keeping touch enough to not seem rude or like he was attempting his own coup.

Churches, even alive he didn't see the point to them. If you really wanted to feel spiritual you did not need a building or some old man yelling at you in Latin to do it. He snorted. "No, there is a difference between the spiritual and the church people. Church people attend every week to wash their sins clean and behave during the week as they wish. With no regards to others. Do you have any contact with other packs at all ? To ask if any in other areas may be experiencing the same problems? There are a few other Sheriffs I may ask discretely without drawing attention to our own problems."

He also thought seriously about sending in some humans he could trust to check this church out. A soft knock at the door and he flicked his monitor off. "Enter."

Jeanne peeked her head in, "It's late, I was wondering if you needed dinner prepared before we retire?"

Tao shook his head, he didn't like eating in front of others. "I will heat something up later, unless our guest needs something? A squirrel perhaps? I'm sure we can find one for you around the estate." He smiled softly.

"West pack doesn't live close enough t-" But then the human was opening the door and speaking to Tao and Riley wasn't about to talk about pack business in front of a human, especially one with a glamored mind like swiss cheese. He clammed up until, once again, Tao was insulting him. "I ate." He snarled, devoting his attention entirely to the vampire. "I ate food I didn't need to trick into letting me eat it." He sneered, "You've been insulting me for the past twenty minutes with your little comments, and I'll thank you to shut your fuckin' face."

Jeanne blinked but left. Tao couldn't help but let his smile widen. "Really, squirrels? Hmm, I would have thought the pup comments would have produced more venom, ah well." She waved it off. Finding weaknesses in the new pack leader should have been expected.

"You make quite a few assumptions yourself, so if we are forced to deal with each other during this little problem and with the treaty negotiations, then why don't we agree to stop with the assumptions? If you have questions to my eating habits, then ask, but do not make me out to be some fledgling only capable of seducing some young idiotic woman to sustain myself."

He rarely fed on a living being and had only three people he trusted enough to use in such a way, never enough to really satisfy but he would be weak if he had no live blood in his diet at all. It was possible to live off of blood bags ,but not recommended, for various reasons. He had been taught that a bite was intimate, and he'd kept that thought. Oh murder wasn't, but he'd stopped killing when he fed long ago.

"It was bear meat, you cold-blooded asshole." Riley replied sharply, baring his teeth. He rose to his feet and strode away from the desk, fighting to keep himself composed. "And I don't care how you eat, I care what you eat and what you are." He let out a growl and tossed his head. "This whole house smells like stagnant blood. I can't see how anyone can bear it, except that you cold ones are just plain wrong." He crossed his arms. "And you- you're Satan in a Sunday hat is what you are, Tao." He spit out the name like it was an insult.

Oh now he had really riled up the shifter. Part of him was thrilled by it, so easy to rile meant easier to keep off guard. Part of him was pissed. He stamped that part down, it was by his own choice that the majority of those living in his jurisdiction had no idea how he ran things. Tell someone that the sheriff refused to allow hunting of innocents, only drank in private and from a private store, and that at least half of his staff and cadre were 'rescues' from other masters and he would be perceived not only as weak, but a target. He needed his time and energy so didn't feel like devoting too much of it to defending himself.

Instead he leaned back in his chair and nodded to the pacing lupine. "I will choose to take that as a compliment. As for my home, the smell does not bother humans and rarely are any of our kind here. Blood often smells stagnant when it has been reheated in a microwave. Disgusting, probably, but better then the alternative. So get off your high horse. You hunt and take down prey, killing it because that is what YOU are. Do not deem to look down your nose at those of us that take more care of our prey then to simply rip it's throats out."

He stood and lowered his voice, "And lower your voice, I won't have you upsetting the household with your accusations. Now, are you ready to work or do you need to gnaw on something?" He spit back.
